You gotta know that this took a huge amount of effort to clarify the mysterious world of wine into graphics that take mere seconds to understand. I couldn't be more proud. It's a lot of fun forcing on it friends and then seeing them light up with instant understanding. The page that explains how to write useful personal wine notes, for example, instantly organizes the way you do your evaluations of wine.

By Bob Tobias I have been using Karen MacNeil’s “The Wine Bible” as a reference for as far back as I can remember. It’s 900+ pages are chock full of facts, anecdotes, and descriptions of all things wine related. There is a new edition coming out in a few months, and it will be interesting to see if it follows the same path as this book. Because…The folks at Wine Folly have distilled (sorry) that information into a book that’s 75% smaller (250ish pages) and with I would wager 1% of the word count. They do that with clear, MEANINGFUL, and consistent graphics that convey much of the same, and in some cases more of the information in the Bible, quickly and effectively. The book has three sections: - Fundamentals: 40 pages on how to buy, taste, handle, and pair wines. Everything you would need to know to obtain and appreciate wine. - Styles: This is my favorite part. It is 130 pages describing varietals and blends. The wines are grouped by Style, Sparkling, Light-bodied white, Full-bodied white, etc. Each style section begins with a one-sentence description of each wine it contains along with a one-page graphic showing the typical manufacturing process for it. After that, each wine in the group is given a two-page spread that, thanks to powerful visuals, presents a wealth of information, including its taste profile, dominant flavors, possible flavors, where it grows, shelf life, expected price range, and pairings. This is a major and much-appreciated departure from MacNeil’s book, which presents wines by region so to read up on a Pinot Gorgio, for example, you had to jump across a number of chapters. - Regions: This is essentially a pivot table of the Styles section, summarizing each growing region and the wines grown there. There is also a complete index.A friend of my had a great suggestion when she saw the book; this book would go great with wine tastings. Not the whole book, necessarily, just the pages relevant to the wines being presented. That would be the left side of each two-page spread. A few quick snaps with your cellphone camera beforehand and surreptitious glances at it now and then during the event can turn you into the star.I received a copy of this book with not further obligation so I could give you this review.Final note: You have to love a book that lists Petroleum as one of the possible dominant flavors of a Riesling.

The format provides you with building blocks for a better understanding of wine, wine regions, tasting profiles, the storage of wine, food pairings and the book includes flavor wheels for pretty much every varietal you can think of. This is definitely wine novice-friendly guide in that you can skim it for as much info as you care to know... but it's also a great reference for a true aficionado who wants to dig deeper or use it as a quick reference or review. The graphics make the presentation of info easy to grasp and fun to read, and the content is well written. I really like the phonetic help with some of the regions - "Blaufränkisch" wasn't exactly part of my vocabulary before. Using it in a sentence will be MUCH easier now that I have this book. :DDon't miss the glossary of terms in the back - and the index! Definitely going to get a few more copies for holiday gifts this year.
