Some of selections actually do qualify as short stories. I will even say that I enjoyed several of those stories. However too much of the collection was a disappointing conglomeration of teasers that introduced characters and then left you hanging. I recommend this advertising catalog only to readers who are already familiar with most of the authors represented. I wish I had read a review like this before I chose this book.

By katherine tomlinson If you’re looking for demons and witches and vampires and werewolves, you’ve come to the right place. There are plenty of writers who deliver solid stories revolving around the bad girls (and boys) of the paranormal pantheon. But there are also a number of stories written by writers who boldly give us something new, something extra, and the result is very entertaining.A surprising number of stories feature protagonists who are working for magical agencies tasked with some sort of oversight. (Yes, bureaucracy follows us into the afterlife.) Stories like “The Agency,” and “Honeysuckle Memories,” and “De Facto” give us well-developed “worlds” where the newbies get all the crappy jobs, like tracking down a wayward cockatrice (as in “The Dog Days of Summer.”) Really, when was the last time you read a paranormal story that had a cockatrice in it?It’s always hard reviewing an anthology like this “boxed set,” because the writers usually bring their A game. One standout for me would be Donna Augustine’s “The Agency,” with its character work that slips from hilarious (the three prankster jinxes) to heart-wrenching (the victims of the Black Plague). I also very much enjoyed Christine Pope’s “Illusions,” a prequel to the first book in her “Witches of Cleopatra Hill” series that features brothers Connor and Damon Wilcox, the hero and antagonist of DARKANGEL.This collection whets our appetite for bigger hunks of work from the writers, included. NIGHTSHADES is a lot of entertainment for the price. My only quibble in the whole book? In a story set in the Plague Years, one of the characters assures her little sister that, “It will be okay.” The anachronism was a little jarring, but the rest of the story was so excellent that I soon forgot it.You can’t go wrong with this boxed set.
17 of 21 people found the following review helpful. these are samples of full length novel - not complete stories. By Kretschm1 these are not short stories or even complete stories, but are exactly like the sample you get if you want to read the first couple chapters of a book for free on Kindle to decide if you want to buy it or not. I write this review based on the first three "stories." This is not a criticism of the writing but rather the marketing of this book.
