About the Author Indranil Goswami has a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He has taught and conducted research at Morgan State University in Baltimore since 1992. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Maryland and is a past president of the Baltimore Chapter of the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers. Indranil has taught PE (CIVIL) Review and FE (CIVIL) Review courses since 2001. Since 2010, all his review course are delivered via online webinars. In 1998, he was nominated for the Bliss Medal for Academic Excellence by the Society of American Military Engineers and in 2003, received the Educator of the Year Award from the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers. In 2014, he received the Best Faculty award from the Civil Engineering Honor Society at Morgan State University. Chavez It's a good practice exam but I feel there were some questions that I never studied in my prep class which made it confusing and a bit frustrating. I thought some questions could have been more clear. I also wasn't a fan of converting the units in the problem. You only have so much time. Overall it's good practice but I'd say a bit more challenging than the ncees

It is well written and well illustrated. The poetry section gives a great foundation on what poetry is and how it is different from regular writing. There are so many opportunities for the students to write and give their opinion on the different writing selections. The common core standards are well covered, I think. I will be recommending this other parents.

Wolinsky There’s a building at 2nd Avenue and 33rd street with a plaza in front, it’s open to the public and very popular with smokers. I never could figure out why anyone would waste the space on a plaza; surely the owners must have lost money on the unused space. But a according to this book, the zoning rules required the building to have the plaza; the city wanted to use it for a subway entrance! The building was from the 1970’s, a time when Mayor Lindsay and Governor Rockefeller had planned the 2nd Avenue Subway line, all the way to downtown Manhattan. It would be almost 40 years before it was built, a delay that resulted from a combination of financial troubles and a fractured city government. Meanwhile, the plaza remainsJoseph Raskin has opened a big can of worms with this book. He brings to light the massive number of subway lines that were planned throughout the area but stayed just that; plans and nothing more. Never mind the 2nd Avenue subway line, that’s been in the works for years. I’m taking about a subway line that would’ve run all the way to the East Bronx. If you’ve ever been there (which is unlikely unless you live there) you’ll know you can’t get there without a car. There was even a plan to build a subway line straight across the city to the Hudson River.Raskin’s research for this book places most of the blame on Mayors who didn’t care for the subway that much. As the city expanded outward, there was a push to build more roadways for the cars and less emphasis on public transport. And what could exemplify the “subways don’t count” attitude like the great Robert Moses, who wrecked the Bronx with his Cross Bronx Expressway? Perhaps the blame should fall on the people as well; more and more New Yorkers drank the cool aid about the “house and car” dream after WWII. There was, however, a movement to build houses on the route of the unplanned subways. Housing was built on Burke Avenue, just because the builders anticipated a subway line going that way.This book should be required reading for a course on NYC history (if such a course exists) because public transit is a major part of life in this city. It ranks up there with Robert Caro’s The Power Broker and Jane Jacobs Death and Life of American Cities. I applaud Raskin’s effort in writing this book; his massive research has paid off.
13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Missed Opportunity By Mel! Vin! I've been waiting for a book like this for a long time, and I was so excited to learn of it. And so my disappointment in the actual result was profound. While it's clear that Raskin knows the stories of the unbuilt lines in tremendous (even excessive) detail, the organization of the book is baffling, and the lack of maps and legible diagrams is unforgivable--especially since Raskin refers to the lines by their historic names (e.g., the Sea Beach Line instead of the N). This is an understandable decision, but it must make the book daunting for those who haven't internalized the old names. A list of lines and names in the back helps a little, but a map or series of maps would have made a huge difference.I know maps are expensive and that old ones often don't reproduce well. But Raskin needed to make the investment in new drawings to illustrate much of what he talks about. I'm very familiar with New York's transit geography, but I repeatedly had to go to other sources to figure out what he was referring to. The narrative structure is equally baffling, with stories coming and going in no particular chronological order. I can't imagine what a more casual reader would make of this.I really wanted to love this book, but I think only the most diehard of NYC railfans will get through this happily.

The theme is largely political showing the conflicts between proposed routes, construction (subway vs. el), real estate developers vs. riders, private management (IRT and BMT) vs. city constructed and managed. (IND), and the conflicts between state and city. There were endless and enervating political delays which delayed construction of new routes for decades. The impacts of the great depression and WW2 are well drawn. One is impressed at the power held by various mayors, Robert Moses, and administrators who were advancing their own political agendas at the expense of sound economic and engineering considerations. These factors persist to this day. It is a wonder that the LIRR to the eastside, the extension of the 7 to the westside , and the initial phase of the 2nd avenue subway are underway despite the political and economic environment.On the negative side, the maps and figures are often poor copies barely readable with a magnifying glass. I wish for clearer and, perhaps, redrawn supporting artifacts.

Here are a few of its many sins:- Flaccid, lifeless prose.- Crammed to bursting with tedious, frivolous detail about the narrator's tedious, frivolous suburban life.- Protagonist can hear everything said by someone atop a cliff, over a raging thunderstorm, as she is drowning in a violent river. (No spoilers here; that's in the prologue.)- Clumsy, inept foreshadowing that destroys any chance for drama. They say when your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Well, this book’s foreshadowing is what happens when the author has nothing but a big, heavy hammer: "This isn’t over yet. I feel something worse coming on. Only this time it’s not going to be a tree or a fire. It’s going to be less obvious, something insidious."- Contrived, wooden dialog. See above.- A double homicide is investigated by a fire marshal. Don't most towns have some kind of department that specializes in police work? What's it called, again? Someone should tell the author.- Every female character is shallow, beautiful, hyper-sexualized, and a threat to the narrator’s marriage. The narrator rarely visualizes another woman without specifying which sexy outfit she pictures her in. If written by a man, one would wonder if the author had ever met an actual woman, or just researched them by watching General Hospital.- “I grabbed a brick from the Kimballs’ side garden, and dropped it in my sweatshirt pocket as I climbed.” One wonders if the author has ever met an actual brick, or just assumed they are made portable for the suburban woman on the go.- The fire marshal (rather hilariously) spoils the ending to Backdraft. Does that mean spoilers are acceptable here? Because I identified her perpetrator in chapter 6.I don't like to be so negative, but this book is so over-praised that it seems necessary to give warning. It's possible that a passable writer lives somewhere inside the author, because occasionally a decent bit of phrasing gets through the filter, but this book isn't her voice.

This book was all over the place; too much going on that wasn't integral to the plot. The action didn't ring true. For example, the main character finds a photo of her husband with another woman. She claims she doesn't know the woman, then later realizes it was her next door neighbor and friend. Based on that photo from his past, she's suddenly thinking of divorce and receiving emotional support from a woman she just met. There were too many characters and none of them were fleshed out. I kept feeling a desire to shake the main character! Or maybe myself, for reading the book.

Surrounded by able-bodied male neighbors, "super woman" climbs the ladder to rescue the neighbor child from the second story bedroom of the burning house; gets clobbered by a burning timber -- that came from where? And later from her hospital bed tearfully laments that she could have done more. "I drew a shuddering breath, tears slipping down my cheeks." And on and on with the cloying self-pity."Despite his disheveled appearance (from what?), he gave off a forceful masculinity, a mesmerizing charisma. His brilliant blue eyes were filled with concern..." "Johnny wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, his firm chest pressed against my back, and I gave into his warmth." Suspense thriller? Try Harlequin romance.You only get what you pay for and this was a freebie.

By marylandfan I managed to make it all the way to the end of this book, but it was painful and I do not plan to read more books by this author. It is hard to understand all of the 4 and 5 star reviews. The writing contains a fair number of grammatical errors, but it's the stilted sentences that really make this book a difficult read. Sentences are short, choppy and sometimes repetitive. The story is OK, albeit a bit improbable. I cannot recommend this book.

Could be a stronger mystery with more character and story development By Yvonna Hays Unpolished and full of clichés, the story and characters lacked development. The solution, while making sense mystery-wise, lacked the development to really make this a true mystery. It seemed as if it was a re-telling of a story that is being passed along, and with each re-telling the story loses more intensity. The author has potential, but needs to spend more time on development.

All she does it come after people and comes of as really annoying. The mystery is unimaginative, with a fast and silly resolution.

About the Author David Kimble formed an affection for all things automobile at an early age. This obsession combined with a skill in drawing led David to the study of drafting and technical illustration at the Academy of Technical Arts. By Cook & Collector This is one terrific book. 192 pages from an amazing car enthusiast with extraordinary skills as an artist. There is a detailed explanation of how David Kimble was able to prepare such elaborate cutaway drawings and his topic selection as presented in this book are first class. Excellent drawings and photographs are beautifully presented in this book. A must have for any car enthusiast from a modern day world class artist..

Awesome Techiniques & Stories behind the Art of David Kimble's By Darlene Cruz What a great book, like the jacket cover said, "Techniques & Stories behind the art." Art illustrations drawings superbly depicted, beautiful. Wow the color, the graphic so mind blogging. You weren't kidding that David Kimble vision was so expressive in his illustration, anatomy and physiology of machinery jumped at you page after page. Motor sports community will absolutely enjoy this book, introduction to David Kimble's life and reasons why his life's work became what you see in this cutaway book. He breaks it down to understand his work, sketched by eye; however he stated, "eyeballing is not the way to go when it comes to cutaway where internal components have to fit correctly within the car's body. Yes, I would think so, intricate mapping, plotted geometrically, or traced from a photograph, first done by hand starts with a line drawing. Horrifying 1960s illustration McLaren M8A, he called it horrifying I saw nothing wrong but whom am I judge I don't have an artistic quality in my vein. Now we see how he separate a car's exterior from its chassis, spot illustration of engine and transaxle, throttle bodies, using engineering drawings and painting, photocopy and vellum. Okay I got carried away there, anyway so much detailed information diecast model and photocopies. Color is important to bring out the illustration. Photographs of other vehicles that scream money duly noted here. Willie G. Davidson really liked his illustration of the Harley-Davidson Hydra-Glide but the deal fell through. What deal, you got to read the story for yourself, so entertaining. You believe a cutaway illustration of the starship Enterprise? Yep, he did it! I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of information, especially his FINAL THOUGHTS section. I received a free book that I had won through LibraryThing. Thank you, Darlene Cruz

With the advent of so much computer graphics power being available, this is becoming a truly lost art. The detail in a Kimble piece is almost more than you can take in at times, as it is so layered that it is tough to interpret, but that is the beauty of a piece of art showing a complex organism like an automobile ... and he puts it all in there. This book goes into his technique which tends to be counter-intuitive, as much of it is done "upside down" compared to most artists. If you have ever considered doing one of these, or have looked on it in wonder, or do illustration of your own, it will be of interest for you to see how one of the all-time masters of the artform creates his treasures. Great addition to any library that includes automotive subjects.

Excellent Exam Book for the NCLEX-PN test - includes Digital Version and a DVD By VIDFAN Years ago, I regretted not taking a Kaplan course for my SAT. I scored lower than I should have and when I went for my master's, I made sure to take the Kaplan course for the GRE. It really helped me score high. What's great about Kaplan is that they teach you how to look beyond the test and get the correct answers by thinking critically rather than just memorizing a bunch of facts. Barron's and Princeton Review also publish helpful test guides, but I found Kaplan's to be far more savvy in showing you the right way to think so that you have the highest likelihood of getting the correct answer.This NCLEX-PN book offers a combination of great advice, helpful techniques and strategies, and even a strong dose of positive thinking. This book contains a DVD, 2 practice tests (one for pen or pencil, the other online only), strategies for success, a detailed analysis of what kinds of questions to expect (grouped by category), and even overviews for what the test does or doesn't do, the differences between various kinds of nurses, and even a section devoted to helping nurses from other countries interested in passing the U.S. exam.What I like about this study guide is that you can download the entire book to your tablet or smartphone and read it on the go (the link and textbook code in inside the book). In addition, it includes a DVD that offers two video lessons to help you master the exam. With the two practice exams, the authors recommend you do the computer test first, because it can analyze your weaknesses and strengths so that you can apply this knowledge to the pen and paper version.Overall I was very pleased with this book - my only quibble is that I wish it contained more than 2 exams for the price.

Contains a DVD, 2 practice tests, one in the book and one online, analysis of all question types, review of alternative format questions, detailed rationales, techniques for the computer adaptive test, strategies for success and a 27 item sample of the NCLEX-PN question bank. Gives a list of Pearson Professional Centers offering NCLEX-PN examinations, has a large index of nursing terminology in the back. The DVD included features NCLEX preparation expert Judith Burckhardt, PhD RN and presents two video lesson to help you master the exam. The three authors and contributors are directors and deans of the nursing and health programs for Kaplan higher education campuses. Pretty thorough and useful tool to have if you're going to take this test.

I took my NCLEX-PN 9/3/2015 and got my Quick results yesterday which was a Saturday for the 48 hrs does include weekend even though it is stated they only post them during business days. I passed my first time. Awesome Sauce!!!! This is the book I used and a content review book. Both helped me big time.

My mother named me Jane after Jane Austen--or maybe Jane Eyre. She said either one would do. With a name like Jane, I might not be a beauty queen or the most popular girl in the room, but I would be smart and strong and make good decisions. I guess I've mostly lived up to my name. My mother died before we could go on our trip to England to visit all of the best Jane-spots, so I'm going with my best friend instead. That's Nate. He's sweet and funny and adorable, and we've known each other since kindergarten. In fact, he was almost my stepbrother until my mom and his dad broke up. But don't get the wrong idea about him. It's never been romantic between us. At the moment, I'm crazy about this mystery guy I've been talking to on a dating site, and he's nothing like Nate at all. I don't know why I'm suddenly finding Nate so attractive, and I don't know why he has started acting kind of strange. Anyway, this is my Jane trip, and I've been waiting for it all my life.

Jane and her mother had a passion for Jane Austen, and a plan to travel to England together. Nate gave Jane the gift of a trip after her mother passed away. They were going to travel to some of the places related to Jane Austen.I have enjoyed several of Noelle Adams books, but this one was very bland. I didn't feel any chemistry between Nate and Jane. I understood the best friend connection, but there was never enough of a spark that I felt between them, to make me think they would want to take the relationship to another level. Even the sex seemed blah. No sense of anticipation or excitement. No heat or passion. The words spoken let me know early on that their relationship was changing, but the words never conveyed any emotion.The storyline sounded good, but I didn't really get anything out of this book. I would definitely recommend that you read it yourself. It may well touch you differently. To me, it wasn't a bad book. I just didn't enjoy it much.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. Charming and sweet short novella By Maria Rose This lovely friends to lovers short novella takes place in England as Jane (a huge fan of all things Jane Eyre and Jane Austen) visits with her best friend Nate. He set this trip up for her, a chance for her to recoup after her mother passed away and to give her what she's always wanted, a trip to all the Jane sites she's loved from the books for so long. Though Jane wishes she could have gone with her mother, being with her best friend is equally exciting and meaningful for her. At the same time, she's recently entered into an online 'relationship' of sorts with a gentleman who calls himself Rochester ( a man after Jane's heart obviously). But while in England, Jane starts to notice little things about Nate, things she's avoided thinking about too deeply until now. Could her own Rochester be right under her nose?This is told from Jane's point of view and you get the sense that she is a friendly, sweet young woman, still grieving the loss of her mother but used to Nate being her rock in all things. I loved seeing her start to realize that Nate is more than just a nice guy - her physical attraction to him starts to manifest itself in new ways and it's a tender and sweet story as it's obvious to the reader that only a man in love with a woman would go to such lengths for her as to plan the trip of her dreams. Since Nate doesn't usually express himself emotionally, Jane is quite taken with her 'Rochester' and his fluid way of writing and his complete understanding of her and her feelings. Of course (and sorry if this is a spoiler, but it's pretty obvious where the plot is headed here), Nate and Rochester are one and the same, and when Jane discovers this, she must decide what she's going to do with this information. Eventually we get to the kissing and whatnot in some unpretentious and emotional scenes between them. I liked everything about this story, from the descriptions of the charming cottage and landscape of their vacation spot, to the ups and downs of the emotional roller coaster as Jane and Nate move forward from friends to lovers. Delightful! 5 stars.

By Sam I became a fan of Noelle Adams last year, and within months owned and constantly read her stories over and over again. I enjoyed her books because they are about characters searching to find themselves and explore their environments, ultimately appreciating the simple joys in life already surrounding them.I had no idea she was working on Chasing Jane, and when I received an ARC of her latest work, I opened to the first page and simply hoped for the best. While I was reading, I found myself really taking in the characters in - becoming a companion to Jane and the English landscape as a character myself. This immersion allowed the novella to stand apart from any other work by Adams, becoming a favorite of mine.I look forward to seeing what Noelle Adams writes next. Hopefully we will see these characters appear in another novel - I would love to see how things develop for Jane and Nate!

I'm a big apple fan, I have apple everything By Mitch There's been such a long wait for the Apple Watch to come out I bought it within the first few weeks that it came out but I didn't even know how to use all the features till reading this book. It's a very detailed user guide that shows how to use all the unique features this great watch has. Learning about the different apps really helped me because I didn't really know how to get full use of my apps before.

(I cannot say I wouldn't want a Lucius for myself...I do love the brooding types that smile only for me. ;) )This book is one of those you need to savor. It is slow paced and full of feelings. It's also set in a period of which authors don't write enough. Jessamin, in fact, is a suffragette who writes speeches for meetings and, at the same times, tries to make ends meet with a bookshop that her father has left heavily indebted because of his gambling addiction. When a Lady offers a hundred pounds for a stolen kiss to a Lord Grim(sby) because she feels rejected by him (in a childish and seflish way if you ask me) Jess, desperate to save the shop, rashly accepts... and in so doing starts a series of events to which no one would have thought.I really enjoyed Christy Carlyle's style of writing. I found it perfect for the time she is speaking about, "fluent" and rich. I liked all her characters too, the likeable ones and the ones not so much (I couldn't stand his sister and I would have slapped her a time or two...or three XD). Even if the story is not perfect, many can say it is too slow, for me it was a very good "first read" from this new author. The perfect book to read when you want something that can soothe your mind and engage your feelings."...she’d felt in their kiss what he had, a strange alchemy of need and desire, a sense that whatever he’d been seeking might have finally been found?"

The plotting was okay, the characters mostly likeable but the writing was somewhat disjointed. There were some parts that were so confusing that I had to go back and re-read several pages.My biggest complaint, though, is the amount of time spent in the character's heads with their thoughts. In my opinion, that is a lazy way to write and add to the page count. I would much rather read engaging conversations than someone's thoughts.It's really too bad because there were characters in this book that I would have liked to have their own story. This is the first book by this author that I have read. I may try one more ...

Vivid characters and lots of sensual chemistry By Jolliffe This is an intriguing romance, set in late Victorian England, full of sensual chemistry and interesting characters.Jessamin, a suffragette, agrees to create a scandal, because she is struggling to keep her late father's debt ridden bookshop open. Kissing a nobleman, in the midst of the ton, is far out of her comfort zone but needs must and the scandal she causes is the least of her worries. Lucius is the accidental heir to a crumbling estate, with his father's diminishing mental health; marrying money is the way to save his ancestral home and appease his demanding father. Fate intervenes; will he forsake his duty for love?Vividly written with some surprises, for both Jessamin and Lucius, there are lots of noteworthy supporting characters, particularly Aunt Augusta. The chemistry between Jessamin and Lucius is tantalising and the ending, perfect fairytale romance.I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
