And I do mean BEGINNING readers. These would be the very first books that parents or teachers can use to help children learn to read. This is rated in the "A" guided reading level. Once your young reader is comfortable reading the level A books, then you can move on to the level B books, and so on. It would be very helpful to have all of the early reading books categorized according to the guided reading levels. It would help parents and teachers choose the correct books for each child's specific reading abilities. But until that happens, look for sets like this, which include the guided reading level. Each little book is eight pages long, which is plenty long enough for brand new readers. Full color photographs appear on each page.I donated this set to my local elementary school's reading program, and I can tell you that the beginning readers love these books. They love to learn about animals. This set allows even the very first readers to learn something about animals, although in very basic terms. The children love the great photographs in this set of books.

We liked this book although we wished there were more builds that can be built using "typical LEGO collection". The models in the book need very sophisticated LEGO parts and are very specific on color and need great deals of both experience and creativity. So this book is an arts book, nature art out of LEGO and not a tutorial for average builders to learn how to make natural scene models. You can still find some little models that can be imitated and some partial ideas to copy to your models. The book author is apparently one of the few top class LEGO gurus as he built plants, animals, ..etc with great detail and beauty. Paper quality is great.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. One of the best LEGO-as-art books out there. Great for coffee table, adults, and oh yeah. Kids. By Quinn Rollins No Starch Press has become the go-to publisher for fans of LEGO who want something a little more than the mass market books that LEGO itself puts out. LEGO's official publications are understandably geared toward children, which is as it should be. No Starch Press has tapped into the market of adults who are either nostalgic enough to remember how much they loved LEGO, or who are rediscovering playing with LEGO themselves, or that rarest of adult--the ones who see LEGO as an artistic medium in its own right. This last group of people are highlighted in Mike Doyle's "Beautiful LEGO: Wild!"This is Doyle's third "Beautiful LEGO" book, following the original and "Beautiful LEGO: Dark." All three have Doyle more as a curator of the best LEGO builds from around the world than an author. He includes a few of his own pieces in the mix, but most of these models are things that are clearly labors of love by other Adult Fans Of LEGO (AFOLs). These artists have found ways to use LEGO to make sculptures and mosaics of landscapes, birds, fish, insects, cartoon characters, and mythical creatures, all under the overarching theme of "Wild."In the preface, Doyle writes that "Seeing how simple shapes combine to give the illusion of a bigger picture is exciting." The way the builders do that varies, and you can see the how the styles of different artists impact how they use these plastic bricks to create organic shapes. Some favorite pieces:Peacock, by Sean Kenney -- using only standard LEGO bricks, making a pixelated kind of animal; Kenney has touring zoo exhibits with dozens of his creations, many of which are life-sized.Sachiko Akinaga's Sea Otter Mum & Pup. This gets more complex, moving beyond only rectangular bricks, adding different angles, rounded pieces, and LEGO facing different directions.Mike Doyle's own piece, Appalachian Mountaintop Removal, is a good example of the scale of some of these projects; at around 10,000 pieces, it's enormous, but is also depicting an entire mountainside. The jumble of vegetation is all made with different LEGO building techniques--most of the conifers are actually LEGO flower stems, simply turned upside-down. Chris Maddison's Wilderness Cabin on the right is another good example of a very small-scale model, again using a completely different mode of tree-building.Andrew Simonson's Ereg Durin is one of the many minifigure-scaled builds that demonstrate living with nature; understandably, many of these depict scenes from or inspired by the elves in "Lord of the Rings"--great examples of building organically and in harmony with nature. Out of ABS plastic that will last forever.I'm including Andrei Pacurar's Steamworks Owl not just because it's beautiful, but also because it reminds me of "Clash of the Titans." There are sections of the book highlighting "Artificial Life," and this is one of the best examples of that.Truthfully, every page of this volume is worth highlighting in a review. Which would be writing a book about the book which would be both Inception-y and copyright violation. I love that Doyle credits the builders in an appendix at the back of the book, he thanks those who participated in a competition to be included, and it feels more like a collaborative achievement than something that Doyle just cooked up on his own. There are similar books out there that obscure where some of the builds came from, I like that the artists get full credit here.If you are, or have ever been, a fan of LEGO, "Beautiful LEGO: Wild!" is a gorgeous way to celebrate that fandom. The printing is high quality, the binding is softbound, but more durable than standard paperback/trade paperback format. It's a great addition to your coffee table oryour playroom. If you're a LEGO builder yourself, you'll find inspiration here. If you have a LEGO-loving loved one, and you're not sure what to buy them for Christmas because they already have Every Damn Thing, this is a great gift idea. In any case, this book is by the fans and for the fans. They get it right.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. LEGO Wild! Incredibly colorful critter creations! By Ashley Glennon Beautiful LEGO WILD! bursts with color from start to finish in this 200 page collection of organic LEGO sculptures. Unlike Mike Doyle’s last book which featured dark LEGO creations, this book celebrates the brighter end of the spectrum where colorful critters jump, fly, spring and splash off every page.Doyle is a masterful curator and continues to showcase the best LEGO creations in the world. More than 100 LEGO builders are featured in this softbound volume which covers a good portion of the plant and animal kingdom. The book opens with some natural landscapes, then quickly moves to trees, flowers, birds, frogs, fish, and dogs. If it has fur, fins, feet or a beak it’s probably in this book, including a LEGO cameo of the grumpy cat. While most creations are photo realistic and natural, Doyle packs in the smiles, too, with plenty of cartoonish bears, beavers, mice and monkeys. The overall tone of this book is amazingly upbeat.Although this book is not an instruction book, there are dozens of small creatures that can be copied just by looking at the photos. Additionally, many models in this book are small by design, making them within reach of many builders. Of course it will help to have a giant LEGO collection in the entire rainbow of colors.Similar to Doyle’s previous books, this book is heavy on photos and light on text. This isn’t a concern though, as this is an inspirational picture book designed to impress. And impress it does, one beady-eyed bug at a time.I give this book five stars for the upbeat tempo and for delivering what the Rainbow Lorikeet implies on the cover—perfectly packed pages of prismatic perfection.

I was very happy to see the price of this book, as I expected $120+ for ANY required textbook. After paying $120 for college math books that were shipped LOOSELEAF and required me to provide my own binder the great print and build quality of this book is MUCH appreciated. It's fantastic to get a BRAND NEW textbook that I actually get to keep at the end of the semester for a very reasonable price. The content seems up to date and I haven't noticed any grammer, spelling, print or other errors that other commercial educational publishers have been making in their books recently. After reading $120+ books from major publishers that CLEARLY had not been reviewed by an editor (or had ANY quality control whatsoever between revisions) this is a nice change.

The author is a seasoned attorney/pilot and wrote the book for real people, not lawyers and CEOs. It has been really easy to read and the best part about it is that he gives you REAL advice! He even includes checklists and flowcharts to help describe and guide you through the confusing legal world. It has tons of great information from buying aircraft/insurance, protecting yourself from the FAA, and running an FBO. I don't know how it compares to other legal resources out there, but its good enough for Embry-Riddle's courses.

I think of myself as someone who is already pretty productive, but this book provided so many useful strategies and ideas that I've never heard before! The great thing about this book is that it's broken down into bite-sized chunks so you can easily do one challenge a day. The problem with most books is that they try to get you to change everything all at once, which never works. Because there are tiny steps to complete each day, it's easy to see a real improvement and stay motivated!Even better, this book is honest and actually pretty funny - I laughed out loud a couple times. Loved it, learned a ton, and would highly recommend this book!!!

The Best 380 Colleges, 2016 Edition (College Admissions Guides)By Princeton Review

Amazon.com Review The Best 379 Colleges, 2015 Edition (College Admissions Guides) An Interview with Rob Franek, author of The Best 379 Colleges What makes The Best 379 Colleges different from other college guides?

The biggest difference is our one-of-a-kind ranking lists. Or, better put: 62 of a kind. We ask students (130,000 for this edition!) at the colleges in this book to rate their schools on dozens of topics and report on their experiences at them. From that student survey data, we tally the book's 62 ranking lists, each one revealing the top 20 schools in a category that an applicant -- or a parent of an applicant -- has told us matters to them. Want to know which colleges have the best career services? The most accessible profs? Are LGBT-friendliest? We have lists for each of these in our book. Another feature only in our book is our eight college rating scores. Using data we get from our college administrator surveys, we score each school from 60 to 99 in eight categories including financial aid, admission selectivity, and fire safety.

Why 379 colleges?

The Best 375 Colleges might be catchier-- but we don't start with a fixed number, then "back in" schools to make that number work as a title. The number of colleges we profile in the book is based on the number of schools that meet our criteria each year as "best. "

How do you pick these "best" colleges?

Three factors are involved: academics, student survey data, and balance. First, a "best" school must offer an outstanding undergraduate education. Our academic evaluations are based on our own visit to the schools (I visit about 50 a year, and collectively our editors and staff visit hundreds), plus data we get from the schools on their program offerings, majors, faculty, and admitted students. We also consider recommendations from our extraordinarily informed National College Counselor Advisory Board. Second, we weigh what students tell us about their schools in our survey. Third, we maintain a balanced representation of colleges in the book by region, size, character and type. Only about 15% of the nation's four-year colleges make it into our book, and we add ‒and drop‒ schools from it every year.

A Useful Guide To A Limited Number Of Colleges By alanhouston The Princeton Review "Best Colleges 2015" is a somewhat useful guide to about 400 of America's 2,000 four year colleges. It does a good job of describing how the "personality" of one college differs from its peers, which can help high school students decide which colleges would be the best fit for them.It has MANY weak points. Most of the colleges included are on the east coast and west coast. In most other states only one or two colleges are covered. Most of the college profiles have not been updated much, if at all, in the past five years. The cost information is a year or two out of date.Yet, even with those weaknesses, this book is worth buying IF a student is looking at some of the colleges that are profiled. By combining this book with the MUCH better Tanabe "Ultimate" guide to colleges, and by also using the up to date cost information on the free College Board website, it is possible to figure out which colleges offer the "best fit" and begin making plans for college visits.Note: The FREE College Board website offers the most current information for every four year college in America, including costs and financial aid, and accurate SAT and ACT score data for each college. The College Board website covers every four year college in America and is the most up to date source of trustworthy information.AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER OF SENIOR YEAR: Go to the admissions website of each college you are considering. Carefully study the deadlines and procedures for "Early Decision I", "Early Decision II" "Early Action", "Rolling Admissions" and for the regular admissions process. At many of the "Top One Hundred" colleges, applying "Early Decision" in October provides a big advantage compared with waiting until December. At many top public universities, the "rolling admissions" process greatly favors October applications over December and January applications. It is impossible for high school counselors to know the current details of the "Early Decision" admissions process at dozens of colleges. High School students and their parents need to do LOTS of homework to decide whether to apply "Early Decision" and students need to begin working in September on the required essays for each college.

The best college search book (and my kids agree) By Paul Allaer **UPDATE AUGUST '15** Rather than have a brand new listing for the 2016 Edition of this book, Amazon lazily did a "cut and paste" and transported all the reviews from last year to here. Why??As to the 2016 Edition (853 pages), we are now at "380 Best Colleges", with four colleges dropped and five new colleges added: Clark University, Earlham College, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Stetson University, and University of New England.Listed below in full is my review of last year's edition, which Amazon simply "cut and pasted" to be listed here:THE BEST COLLEGE SEARCH BOOK (AND MY KIDS AGREE)The Princeton Review publishes a number of college search-related books, including the "Complete Book of Colleges" and this one. This book is essentially a distilled version of the "Complete Book", and frankly a lot more useful (but for people completely new to the college-searching process, definitely check that out too)."The Best 379 Colleges (2015 Edition)" (837 pages) is similar to last year's edition. After holding the number of best colleges at 378 last year (remember this book started off in 1992 with the best 250, where have the years gone!), this year there are 8 new "best" colleges: Assumption College, Coe College, College of St. Benedict, Gordon College, Randolph-Macon College, Siena College, State University of New York-College of Environmental Sciences, and University of Louisville. Seven schools from last year's list were dropped (but if the inflation of "best" colleges continues, it's inevitable we'll get to 400 colleges at some point). There are over 60 fun-to-browse top 20 lists of best/worst, such as "Most Beautiful Campus", "Students Study the Most", "Party Schools", and "Most Politically Active Students" (my daughter's school is the #10 ranked school on that list, it was ranked #4 last year, so yes these rankings change from year to year, although not sure how exactly these rankings come about, a drop from 4 to 10 in a single year seems pretty steep). The best feature of this guide remains the 2 page layout for each of the colleges, with in-depth information on campus life, academic selectivity (the number of applicants, how many were accepted, and of those how many actually decided to attend), up-to-date tuition and room/board costs (I checked the numbers of my daughter's college, and they are accurate), etc. Another aspect that is very helpful is the right page sidebar, in which the essence of the university is distilled, and Princeton Review's final assessment on how tough it really is to gain admission when all is said and done. I again re-read the listings of the various colleges that my daughter and my son considered before making a final choice (she chose a school in DC, he stayed in Ohio), and can only state that all of what is written in here seems very much on point. In the end, the proof is in the pudding: of the many college guides out there, my daughter spent more time with this book (when she was looking at colleges a few years ago) than with any other. This book is not the first place to start the college search, but once your son or daughter has narrowed down his/her colleges of choice, and assuming those colleges are featured in the "best 379", this book clearly is the best resource, the last step before a campus visit, and can be used again following the campus visits. I've looked at a lot of college-search books and if I was forced to recommend only one book among all the college search guides, this book is it, period.

By Pheebers This is a book we have picked up constantly as we think about which colleges are right for my twins, who are currently juniors in HS. It's very cleanly printed and easy on the eyes. Each college gets a 2-page spread, and the sections are consistent, so you know exactly where to look if you have a quick question like "is it a big school?" or "what's the acceptance rate?" or "is the culture mostly preppy or earthy-crunchy?"We love that they talk about the school's "typical" student and that they interview students, too. It gives you more than googling does, and faster, and it's easier to do when there's more than one person. The only thing I would change would be to include a big map of the country on the first page, and on each school's page I would put a little map with an indication where the school is. I know my local area, but I've never heard of some of the schools across the country, and it would be helpful.

When the San José mine collapsed outside of Copiapó, Chile, in August 2010, it trapped thirty-three miners beneath thousands of feet of rock for a record-breaking sixty-nine days. After the disaster, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Héctor Tobar received exclusive access to the miners and their tales, and in Deep Down Dark, he brings them to haunting, visceral life. We learn what it was like to be imprisoned inside a mountain, understand the horror of being slowly consumed by hunger, and experience the awe of working in such a place-one filled with danger and that often felt alive. A masterwork of narrative journalism and a stirring testament to the power of the human spirit, Deep Down Dark captures the profound ways in which the lives of everyone involved in the catastrophe were forever changed.

“The equal, if the geographical inverse, of Into Thin Air.” ―Maureen Corrigan, NPR’s Fresh Air

“Weaving together the drama of the miners' harrowing ordeal below ground with the anguish of families and rescuers on the surface, Tobar delivers a masterful account of exile and human longing, of triumph in the face of all odds. Taut with suspense and moments of tenderness and replete with a cast of unforgettable characters, Deep Down Dark ranks with the best of adventure literature.” ―Scott Wallace, Los Angeles Times

“Whether the story is completely new to you, or if you were one of the millions glued to the news reports and wondering, will they make it-physically, emotionally, spiritually-you'll be greatly rewarded to learn how they did.” ―Mac McClelland, The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)

“Héctor Tobar takes us so far down into the story and lives of the Chilean miners that his reconstruction of a workplace disaster becomes a riveting meditation on universal human themes. Deep Down Dark is an extraordinary piece of work.” ―George Packer

“In this masterful dissection of the 2010's dramatic sixty-nine day ordeal by thirty-three trapped Chilean miners, Héctor Tobar weaves a suspenseful narrative that moves back and forth between the waking nightmares of the buried men, and those of their families on the earth's surface. In Deep Down Dark, Héctor Tobar takes us deftly to the very cliff-edge of human survival.” ―Jon Lee Anderson

Everyone was tuned in, waiting the outcome, hoping, stressing, praying. I was really looking forward to hearing their story and what went on down there. It's such an intriguing real life story with an actual happy ending, Deep Down Dark goes behind the scenes and tells us their story.33 men: 69 days unimaginable but it happened in Chile in 2010. Until now it was one of those news stories we all remember but Hector Tobar has brought these men to live as human beings; fathers, brothers, husbands and sons. You will learn about their lives before and their lives since. It's impossible to live through something like this and NOT have it change you.The truth about the conditions is as bad as one would imagine but to hear it told straight from the miners experiences is heart wrenching but also speaks to the human spirit and ones ability to survive even under the worst conditions. These men experienced a full gamete of emotions: hope, despair, loneliness, companionship, isolation, encouragement, depression. You name it; they felt it during those 69 days. The only anguish that parallels theirs is the families 1/2 mile above them waiting for news, praying, hoping, day after day after long day.I like that Tobar begins with these mens stories and takes us through their lives leading to the accident, during and after. It humanizes them. A father leaving for work. A husband denied his daily goodbye kiss because his wife is mad at them. These are ordinary, every day men going to work, until they aren't.The story that had the world watching is beautifully told by Tobar and answers all the questions you would have about these men and their ordeal. Their ordeal did not end when they were rescued and for many, never will. The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine is as captivating as the original news story itself and then some!

By Bookreporter Héctor Tobar’s DEEP DOWN DARK tells the stories of the 33 Chilean miners trapped in Chile’s San José mine for 69 days in 2010. The book, a chronology of the events and a collection of portraits of the men both above and below ground, is the first of its kind, honoring an agreement the miners made to one another to tell their story only as a group.Tobar begins DEEP DOWN DARK with a description of the San José mine: a rocky, lifeless mountain situated in the Atacama Desert of Chile. Though there is a city nearby, Copiapó, it serves more as a temporary home for miners working their seven-day shifts, leaving outside visitors to the San José few and far between. Tobar, however, eagerly invites readers into this male-dominated world, exposing the dilapidation and ever-blowing dust of the mine and preparing them for the miners’ eerie descent into the depths of the earth. He explains how the workers come from all ends and social ranks of Chile, with some enduring stifling day-long bus rides even before their shifts begin. Tobar effortlessly employs the geography of Chile as a vehicle for his narrative, giving readers both a sense of Chile’s layout and the personalities of the men.As the morning of August 5th dawns, we watch the miners of the A Shift prepare for their 12-hour-long workday. In an ironic note, a few of them were not even scheduled to work that day, but were making up for previous missed days. Many of them, we are told, had concerns about the mine’s safety after observing a crack in the Ramp, the central road connecting all of San José’s underground passageways and the only way to leave the mine. Though there are several escape “chimneys” placed on levels throughout the mine, San José’s standards for safety are notoriously low, and few of these chimneys are equipped with the ladders that would make escape a possibility, another complaint of the miners. Their concerns went unanswered, however, and, accustomed to their lots in life, they went about their workday normally, ignoring the ever-present --- though oppressively eerie --- rumbling of the mountain. As they prepare to enter the mine shaft, Tobar handles their characters with great care, presenting them neither as heroes nor villains, but as regular men dealing with the monotony and banality of working life. Still, their personalities begin to shine --- from Mario Sepúlveda, nicknamed Perri (short for “Perrito,” or “small dog”) for his canine-like loyalty and aggression, to Yonni Barrios, a paunchy Romeo who moves between the homes of his wife and girlfriend depending on their moods. Tobar takes readers through the day, weaving personal details and stories seamlessly with the plot, distinguishing each of the 33 miners from one another with nicknames and humorous anecdotes. Finally, a huge chunk of the mountain falls in a single piece standing about 550 feet tall and weighing 770,000 tons and blocks the Ramp. As rock falls and dust and debris fly everywhere, Tobar relays the men’s reactions. Some, like Mario Sepúlveda and Alex Vega, immediately pushed the men to find another way out of the crumbling mine. Others, like the young Bolivian immigrant Carlos Mamani, were terrified and took shelter in the Refuge, a fortified room within the mine stocked with basic medical supplies and enough food for about 15 men to survive for only a few days. The men in charge, Luis Urzúa, the shift manager, and Florencio Avalos, the shift’s foreman, instruct Yonni Barrios to keep the men in the refuge from touching the food, as they may be stuck for days. But mob mentality takes over, and he is quickly overpowered by several hungry miners. Here Tobar begins to alternate the chapters to show the events as they unfold both above and below ground. His talent for pen portraits continues as he exposes the miners’ family members --- their dramas, fears and hopes --- accurately without feeling vulgar or voyeuristic. Media coverage of the mine collapse is spotty, at best, and several family members do not find out until much later in the evening that their husbands, boyfriends and sons may have died. Tobar is fair in his characterizations of the San José workers above ground, but does not leave out the fact that the authorities were not called until more than five hours after the collapse. As desperation begins to sink in, the miners realize one very hopeful thing: there are 33 of them, all alive and all uninjured. Thirty-three is a special number for the mostly Catholics as it is the age of Christ’s crucifixion --- surely a sign, especially since so many of them were not even scheduled to work that day. This realization steels them for a while, giving them time to think about their families above. The memories of miner Richard Villarroel are particularly touching as he remembers his pregnant girlfriend and prays that their son will not grow up without a father as he did. Meanwhile, above ground, the families are all reporting to San José , furious that they were not alerted earlier. Some, like the mining family of Alex Vega, use fake names to sneak into the mine in rescue groups, figuring that they, as miners, would be of greater help than most.Soon, however, the truth becomes apparent: no rescuer, miner or not, will be able to penetrate the mine of San José. Many families come to the conclusion that since they cannot help inside the mine, they will help by staying as close as possible. These families come to build what will be known as Camp Esperanza, a makeshift community of friends and families who want to stay nearby in case new information comes out. The owners of the San José appear to have completely given up, making the collapse a disaster of the people, uniting estranged families and unconnected citizens alike.Inside the mountain, the 33 survive by rationing their supplies and drinking water pumped into the mines during their previous shifts. One man, José Henríquez, becomes the religious leader of the group, leading the men in prayer every day at noon. Their shared fears unite them, and, shockingly, there are few to no disagreements as they spend their days playing homemade checkers and dominoes. As time wears on, they even begin to ask one another for forgiveness for old offenses, presenting themselves openly and honestly in ways they never could before the collapse. During one such apology session, Alex Vega, now the skinniest of the group, asks that they skip eating for the day so they can survive longer. His nobility and willingness to sacrifice encourage the men, and they continue to survive with a newfound respect for one another.Above ground, several search-and-rescue attempts are in effect and, finally, after many missteps, one breaks through to the men. It is at this point that they deliver their world famous message “Estamos bien en el refugio, los 33.” Though it seems that all will be well from now on, Tobar carefully details the dangers still present: the miners must learn to eat normally again, several of them have entered the early stages of kidney failure, and their hope is dwindling. Their contact with the surface, though miraculous, interrupts the unity they have created, and they begin to become frustrated and even angry with one another. Meanwhile, efforts are still being made to rescue them, and supplies are being sent down in the form of food, medicine, iPods, books, and letters from their families. These messages, however, only make them feel worse as they serve as reminders of the distance and time they have spent away from their loved ones. Exposing the days of the miners post-contact is the greatest strength of Tobar’s book, as people worldwide focused only on the excitement of the men, rather than the agony of their time spent waiting for rescue even after contact was made. When the time comes for the men to leave their rocky womb, they separate to make their peace with the mountain. Like hunters or sailors, they have an immense respect for the source of their work, blaming only the mining company for their ordeal. Some, like Raúl Bustos, destroy their things, wanting to keep their time in the mine private and personal. Others spray graffiti on the walls and leave behind pictures to preserve their memory. Mario Sepúlveda takes rocks from the collapse to give to the rescue team as souvenirs. And, just as quickly as they were trapped, the miners are saved. Tobar is quick to point out that their journey is not over, with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the pains of celebrity making their transitions even more difficult, but they are alive and stronger than ever before. No longer united by the tragedy, the 33 see less of each other after the rescue and some argue endlessly. But, as Tobar writes, once they are all together, anyone can see the shared love and respect they have for one another. As the daughter of a Chilean, I can remember exactly where I was both when the mine collapsed and when the miners were rescued. Devastating though it was, the San José collapse reminded Chileans of the strength and harmony that bonds them. The miners were correct in believing that they should not tell their story to just anyone, and it is clear now that they found the perfect outlet in Héctor Tobar. His retelling of their suffering is immediate, vivid and, above all, haunting. Even people who followed the story religiously will learn something new in DEEP DOWN DARK, an extraordinary work of narrative journalism.Reviewed by Rebecca Munro

35 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Really well written, insightful, complete story By Thomas Porter Very well written, with a real skill at bringing out the dramatic elements of the story when that is called for. For example, Mr. Tobar has very good command of the voice he is writing in and, as the first contact with the miners approaches, his narrative turns dramatic. As this moment approaches, his story is emotional and suspenseful. He is also very insightful regarding the personalities involved, and how they relate to each other. For example, two of the miners were in conflict while trapped, and also after their rescue. He explores this conflict and provides some insight regarding why it was so. Also for example, one of the miners started prayer sessions but as the days dragged on, attendance at these dwindled and he narrates the ebb and flow of these sessions.Another example of this is his description of the immediate aftermath of the mine collapse, when some of the miners raided the very small emergency food supply. His description of this is immediate, as if the reader were witnessing the drama of these terrible hours first hand.He also, thankfully, spends a lot of time on the family members and their various personalities and relationships as they camped out near the mine. Also, there were basically two groups trapped in the mine, engineers and miners, and he does a good job explaining how this affected the interaction of the miners while trapped.Photographs and drawings of the miners and the mine would have improved the book but it is a really good, insightful, dramatic narrative of an extraordinary story.

Right away we in the middle of an intense love scene that gives way to impending peril that gives way to … well, I don’t want to spoil it because the plot really moves along at a great clip. And, yes, if you like a little kink in your paranormal romance, you will find that here too. Overall, a super-engaging read for fans of the genre!

By Heaven Help Me I completely lost track of time and forgot that the outside world while I was reading this book--oops! I forgot all about chores and instead sat at the kitchen table with my slippered feet crossed, eagerly drinking up this story. I really can't wait to read more from Deva because it's not often you find yourself engrossed in a story so completely and quickly, you know? The characters were all very real feeling. I don't want to give anything away, but I got so mad at some people sometimes, and I was also all caught up in all the romance. I must have cussed and awww'd a million times as I read this book. It's great!
