About the Author Bettina Malle and Helge Schmickl graduated from the Vienna University of Technology in 1991 with masters of science in chemical engineering and received doctorates in technical sciences in 1993. They have published books and conduct workshops on the production of vinegar, distilled spirits, and essential oils, emphasizing the use of fruits and herbs right from the garden. Bettina and Helge have been married since 2002. That same year they moved to Klagenfurt, Carinthia (Austria), where they host their seminars and conduct research and developments in fermenting and distilling. They have two children.

All descriptions are easy to follow and are written from a practical point of view. Beginners will appreciate the instructions "Traditional Method" and "Simple Vinegar Fermentation". Both sections contain important tips how to improve the quality of vinegar right from the start of fermentation, without any analysis or calculation. Some tips were only known among professional producers for so far, the authors adapted these methods to household conditions - just by evaluating vinegar's smell, taste and appearance. Experienced readers learn from in-depth descriptions and more advanced instructions to receive fermented vinegar in an outstanding quality.From my own experience I know it's not so easy to ferment tasty vinegar by yourself. I've read several vinegar books, none of them describes the whole process more structured. The authors point out all critical issues - source of alcohol, infections, plagues, storage, old mother-of-vinegar, etc.The huge collection of recipes is amazing, for fermented vinegar (e.g., cider vinegar, aceto balsamico, etc.) as well as the usage of vinegar.

With this book my students are able to work independently, especially to analyse the acetic acid and alcohol content in vinegar with simple equipment. The broad variety of described analytical methods is amazing! Excellent textbook for an interested audience.

Melega was the best teacher I ever had By Cameron I was a student of Mr. Melega's for three social studies courses during high school and as a student I thought Mr. Melega was the best teacher I ever had! He is the type of teacher that has expert content knowledge and a teaching style that actively engages students and makes learning fun. Now I am a high school social studies teacher myself and this book has been EXTREMELY helpful in teaching my world history course. It provides an excellent overview of world history and is written in a style that is very appropriate for high school students. It is so good I often assign class readings from this book rather than the school provided textbook because it is so well written and provides the perfect amount of information for a general world history survey course. The provided quiz and test questions in the book are also great and I often use those for review with my class. For under $20 this book is a total steal!!! Thanks Mr. Melega!

My study habits over the years have been less than stellar, but with the help of this book I have learned many tricks to studying better. Take aromatherapy oils for instance, I never knew that they could help you focus your mind and study better. Finding a quiet place has always been a struggle with me, especially when i have three kids, but I know now that it is necessary to learn properly.

If you don't learn, you stagnate and will not be as successful in life.This book explains to those in school how to treat education like a career. It entails taking a leadership roll at times, taking risks and having pride in what you do. The book explains how to set education goals and how to go about acheiving them through time management, relationships with teachers and other students, keeping the body strong and different things that make your environment a healthy place in which to learn. It teaches you to have a positive attitude, where to sit in a classroom for best results, homework help and more. It explains how to take breaks from study for optimal performance and why you should turn off all phones, Ipods and electronics while studying. The book discusses note taking, how to listen effectively, how to read textbooks, how to understand directions, when to participate and when not to. These things also help later on in life when you do have a career. The book goes into how to research and tools for study like making lists and using flash cards. It is a worthwhile book for any student. It contains common sense ideas and some new ones all in one small book.

However, I was very disappointed when I downloaded it to find that all the photographs in the book were not available so you only get basically one third of a book with a lot the the text making no sense as it relates to the photographs. Would not have bother if I had known that the Photos were not included.

The reason I gave it four stars is because it referenced several pictures that would have been interesting, but they were not in the book.

Great combination of fiction and non-fiction By Meks Librarian This was a non-fiction read I truly enjoyed and can highly recommend.Originally published around the year 1900 (I couldn't find any clearer information) and aimed at children, "Buried Cities" describes not only what life must have been like when Pompeii, Olympia and Mycenae were bustling cities, but also how they came to be lost and eventually were found again.The chapters about Pompeii and Olympia each start with the story of a child living (Pompeii) or visiting (Olympia) there. Characters, places, rooms and situations come alive by very vivid descriptions. Even without the many pictures that originally were part of the book (but not in my free kindle version), it was easy to mentally see the sites, hear the sounds and even smell the scents.Pompeii's story is of course much more dramatic than Olympia's, and Mycenae is different from both. But all three are "lost cities" and offer a fascinating glimpse into worlds long gone, where a lot of what went on in people's daily lives wasn't all that much different from ours, if looked at some of the most basic aspects.What I read in the chapter about Olympia regarding Praxiteles' statue of Hermes with baby Dionysos made me do some research about the artist and his works. Also, I looked at some interesting websites about Pompeii and Mycenae - I love it when reading one book leads to such excursions and a bit of extra learning.Jennie Hall (1875-1921) was a historical writer and teacher. She must have written quite a lot: goodreads.com shows 37 entries for her. But information is sparse - there is not even a wikipedia entry about her. I would have liked to know more, but all I could find after taking a closer look at the first pages of some online replicas of her books was that she was an "Instructor in History and English in the Francis W. Parker School, Chicago".

I am a college student and I have been recently searching for Study Aids to support me, so far this one is far the best and unregretful one I've ever tried. It actually improved my mood and my mental math skills. I am approaching to master tougher questions in college. It is like they took bits of text and copy/pasted onto the cards without streamlining. I was expecting there to be more vocabulary or single topics per card. Some cards had several vocabulary words on a single card. Other cards had no vocabulary. I also planned on having students quiz one another with the cards. These will not work for that purpose. They did give me some talking points or areas from which to create a lesson.

While the history and scientific background on EO's was interesting, there was zero advice on practical application. Instead, the author repeatedly advises the reader to sign up for his free e-course, or to sign up for his e-mail list in order to get 50 free EO recipes.This product was a personal purchase for myself, which was offered for free through the kindle store. I am reviewing it solely because I want to share my experience with other potential customers. By Ann Moore I enjoyed reading the book until I found out it was strictly a marketing tool for doTerra. I don't mind selling products, but they were not up front about that. It puts a slight edge on it that made me skeptical about everything. Again, it was an informative book, but everything in it is a pitch. I was looking for something with overall research on oils, not just one companies information.

Big Magic is one of the most honest discussions about the creative process that I’ve ever read. Gilbert strikes a playful and conversational tone, but make no mistake, this is all straight talk. Her no-BS attitude helps do away with the unrealistic expectations and unnecessary melodrama attached to the concept of “creative living” (like how she so expertly pish-poshes the "tormented artist" ideal). And in its place, she asks all people who feel called to create (writers, painters, musicians, ice skaters, WHATEVER) to quietly and joyfully accept their creative inclinations and ideas as gifts from the universe. She reminds them to approach their creativity with curiosity and openness, with playfulness and joy—even when it’s tough, even when there is no Pulitzer, no bestseller list, no Olympic medal, no call from the Met. Own that creativity, she encourages. Also, stay light with it.This was the message I (apparently) desperately needed to hear. I’m a stay-at-home mom with three young children. And when people ask me what I do, that is what I always tell them. But that isn’t what I want to tell them. What I want to tell them—what I want to shout from the rooftops, in fact—is that I’m a writer. Sure, barely anyone reads what I write, I’ve never been published, and it probably goes without saying that I’ve never been paid for a single sentence. In other words, no one really gets anything out of my work but me. But I love it, straight up. So I keep writing, regardless.Yet it feels weird to declare yourself “A Something!” when that something doesn’t earn you money or status or likes or hits or retweets. Which means even though this side-passion feels so authentically “me,” I hide it so people won’t think I’m a loser, an imposter, a wannabe, an embarrassment, a failure…and the list goes on.I guess this reality had been bumming me out more than I realized, because when I read the following words, they resonated with me in an unimaginably powerful and loving way--like I was receiving a cosmic hug:“Shake yourself free of all your cumbersome ideas about what you require in order to become ‘creatively legitimate’… You do not need a permission slip from the principal’s office to live a creative life. Or if you do worry that you need a permission slip—THERE, I just gave it to you… Now go make something.”In other words, Gilbert’s message is this: accept that you need to create. Accept that this is a part of you, that you are ALREADY “creatively legitimate.” And just do what you naturally feel compelled to do. Do it with joy—even when it gets difficult—and don’t worry about how it will be received (if it’s received at all). If you are called to be a maker, then you will just have to make. By IRG Given the success of her earlier works, it's probably no surprise that Gilbert has now entered the self-help book genre. I can easily see how her editors and publishers might have pushed her along this path and into creating this book. It's not without merit but it's one of those things where it might never have seen the light had it NOT been written by a best-selling author who does intersperse her thoughts with her real-life experience with the challenges of the creative process and who has the creds to speak with authority.Your response to this book is likely to be based as much on how many books/articles you've read on the topic of creativity rather than on what the author actually puts forth here--or your personal feelings about her life. If you've read a lot already, you'll know that there isn't necessarily anything "new" here on the subject but rather, as always, some clever packaging and a unique POV--and, as you'd expect of a good writer, some memorable quotes. What may keep you more interested are the various personal insights Gilbert offers on her own life and its creative path. She is honest about the difficulties and that alone helps "ground" her book and give it the credibility it needs to be a true inspiration.Big Magic is one of those titles that turned me off and not on. It's only the subtitle that drew me in: Creative Living Beyond Fear. Yes, that's the thing about creativity. It requires risks and comfort with the unknown. Fear is the killer and the dragon we must face to shape our best lives.If you come away with nothing more than a bit less fear about living your daily life as you would like, then the book is worth your time. Sometimes it's not about one's career or writing a book or screenplay or achieving world fame or success. Sometimes it's just about getting all the joy and juice out of an average day and life. All inspiration is personal and subjective. If Gilbert's work has "spoken" to you, you're likely to both enjoy and benefit from her insights from her journey. Clearly she has been living a creative life on many levels.

By Heather LaRee I've hit my happy...stride in this book... when reading a book that I absolutely don't want to stop...I want to keep seeing flashing neon lights framed around the BIG MAGICal WORDS that spells, "YES YES YES YES YES!"Thankfully, I'm also in the section where Gilbert reminds and affirms that LIFE doesn't always abide to how and what we want when we want it...but she also encourages that... if we are faithful lovers, that magical "IT" won't leave us either. So, I have 100 pages remaining, but am SO pumped and happy that I have this snippet of time to WRITE... a review.If you're passionate about your writing, your art, your whatever-makes-your-precious-heart-sing & be happy... I highly recommend Gilbert's book -- this one. For if you've stalled, set down, given up, cried privately, wondered if it's just too freaking late for you to be the artist, the receiver, a creator, because of the other practical life... here is an experienced wayshower who calls your bluff, your whatever you've told yourself why you can't. She's been rejected (tons), she's kept her day jobs, she's continued through deserts of unknown, silence, angst, doubt, about "the work"...and she's laying it out for us/me/you/your offspring/your friend... find your way.Find it. Because it IS there (patiently waiting, playing, whistling, digging in the sand with its toes) and it's probably not quite how you've framed it (if you've stalled).I am feeling this is my "eat, pray,, love writing" book. A Huge Help To Understand And Navigate Grade 2 Common Core Math By ELO1216 Along with the English Language Arts book, I used this with my twins when they were in 2nd grade (they are in 3rd now, and the grade 3 books are great). Since core standards / common core / state standards was so confusing to me as a parent, plus all the news attention it was getting, I wanted to make sure my kids and I could navigate through this new educational landscape. What I loved about this book is first of all illustrations and artwork really helped my kids stay focused, and also made it fun for them to learn. Second of all - it seemed to follow their core lesson plan, so the work we did in these books was like extra tutoring in a way, and really helped the kids get it. Third of all - it really helped me as a parent see what this whole common core thing was about, and what the teachers (and state) were doing regarding the way it was taught, and how to really understand it. Math is particularly challenging in this common core world, and this book was a massive help to my family and I in understanding the how's and why's of the concepts.
