Another amazing book by Art Ludwig By walter sharshon I recommend that you get the 3 companion books on greywater treatment "Create an Oasis", "Branched Drain Greywater Systems" and "Builder's Greywater Guide". The information in these volumes will keep most of us far more informed than most of the regulators, the system builders, and the experts-in-theory. These volumes are real-world gems.Art Ludwig has cut to the core of wastewater issues. He's obviously done all of his homework, mulled-over the variables, and come up with a common sense, economically reasonable, environmentally responsible approach to wastewater. I expect to save money that I would have spent on a post-septic tank, aerobic unit that would seemingly have been ecologically responsible; but because of the technological overkill, ultimately that system would have defeated my altruistic environmental concerns. The sheer volume of information in each of his greywater books puts other sources to shame. Each volume is very well written, being clear, amusing, and concise. I can't imagine improving these books, other than keeping the information updated with future editions. These books talk the talk and walk the walk better than anything else that I've seen. Buy a set for yourself, a set for your neighbors, and a set for the regulators.

Don't treat home without it By A Customer In the annals of 'appropriate' technology Art Ludwig's work stands out as a no-nonsense guide to getting it right the first time. Ludwig has been-there-done-that-and-bought-the-T-shirt. Instead of unprocessed data mixed with wishful thinking he gives fifty pages of distilled results. He explains in plain english what works, what doesn't and why. Clear technical descriptions allow professional contracters or do-it-yourselfers to design, build and operate graywater systems under varied conditions. In our years of related international work we've met only a few practitioners who combine experience with clarity. This guide reflects such rare talent. Don't treat home without it.Doug Mulhall and Katja Hansen built wastewater recycling facilities worldwide and are authors of the first tropical wastewater recycling guide to be published by the European Commission.

It explains how to adapt the round peg of sensible greywater reuse to the square hole of bureaucratic regulations. Art Ludwig is straight-forward and fun, covering relations with inspectors, and even featuring a complete copy of the greywater model code, with a discussion of the significance of every important passage and specific suggestions for improving greywater laws.

Most amazing to me is the way the author effortlessly weaves pearls of wisdom from his years in the start-up community throughout. The book is full of good advice for anyone thinking about starting a company or already in the start-up world - but it's so masterfully communicated, you barely realize you've just absorbed the equivalent of many hours worth of good advice. In fact, you finish feeling totally empowered to take on the thrills and challenges of building a business, and somehow feel you've been ready for it all your life!

Live vicariously By Jerome Colonna Week after week, I listen as entrepreneur after entrepreneur tells me of their frustrations working at their startup. Time after time, I think, Geez, this would make a great book, a great movie. Eliot's done it. He's turned their intrigue, the bitterness, the backstabbing, the crazy-assed dysfunction into a helluva a good read. The good news is that no one really gets killed. The great news is that we all get to live out those fantasies.

How can a story about starting a new business be read with anything more than lukewarm disinterest?Well, I was wrong. I was blown out of the water by this fascinating, fun, and yes, thrilling novel about friendships, personal growth, and being an entrepreneur in the startup industry. The main character, Mara, is smart as a whip and her voice comes through clearly as she adventures equally on bikes, climbs, and learning about the world of startups. This story not only surpassed my expectations, but I've found myself thinking about what will happen in the next installment. It's suspenseful, informative, and even poignant. I can't wait to share this with friends and read the next edition, Version 2.0!

Without this book, the ACI code is impossible to follow as an undergrad student. This book. Does. A. Great job of explaining the content of the code and how to apply it. The book also has a lot of example problems, which is great, until you run into mistakes/omissions. The example problems will often leave out units and pull in values without explaining where they came from. Also, when running through the excessive problems, many of the given solutions are incorrect. This makes any student rage when they find out they had the right answer an hour ago, but the book told them they were wrong.

New York Times and Los Angeles Times Bestseller! As every day brings urgent reports of growing water shortages around the world, there is no time to lose in the search for solutions.

The U.S. government predicts that forty of our fifty states-and 60 percent of the earth's land surface-will soon face alarming gaps between available water and the growing demand for it. Without action, food prices will rise, economic growth will slow, and political instability is likely to follow.

Let There Be Water illustrates how Israel can serve as a model for the United States and countries everywhere by showing how to blunt the worst of the coming water calamities. Even with 60 percent of its country made of desert, Israel has not only solved its water problem; it also had an abundance of water. Israel even supplies water to its neighbors-the Palestinians and the Kingdom of Jordan-every day.

Based on meticulous research and hundreds of interviews, Let There Be Water reveals the methods and techniques of the often offbeat inventors who enabled Israel to lead the world in cutting-edge water technology.

Let There Be Water also tells unknown stories of how cooperation on water systems can forge diplomatic ties and promote unity. Remarkably, not long ago, now-hostile Iran relied on Israel to manage its water systems, and access to Israel's water know-how helped to warm China's frosty relations with Israel.

Beautifully written, Let There Be Water is and inspiring account of the vision and sacrifice by a nation and people that have long made water security a top priority. Despite scant natural water resources, a rapidly growing population and economy, and often hostile neighbors, Israel has consistently jumped ahead of the water innovation-curve to assure a dynamic, vital future for itself. Every town, every country, and every reader can benefit from learning what Israel did to overcome daunting challenges and transform itself from a parched land into a water superpower.

How Israel achieved water independence in 10 years By Yoram Hazony Seth Siegel has written a fascinating, engaging and highly readable book telling the story of how Israel went from chronic water shortages to being a water-exporting nation roughly between 2001 and 2013. Most people probably don't feel they need to know how this happened. But the story of Israel's struggles and ultimate triumph over the scourge of water scarcity is a drama so exciting, and it has such an exhilarating ending, that anyone who picks up this book will end up being very happy they did.Siegel picks up the story of water scarcity in Israel in the 1930s, when British experts were issuing one report after another arguing that the Jews trying to flee Nazi-dominated Europe just could not be physically accommodated in British-controlled Palestine. The Zionists, headed by David Ben-Gurion, sought to prove the British wrong, and thus was born the Israeli effort to turn a half-arid, half-desert land into a water-rich country capable of sustaining millions.Along the way, Siegel has a great time telling how the Jews got water to their illegal settlements in the Negev desert; how the National Water Carrier brought the Sea of Galilee to the southern deserts and made the city of Beersheva possible; how Israeli-invented drip irrigation proved that it could not only save half the agricultural water needs of the world, but could do so while at least doubling crop yield for just about anything farmers grow; how Israeli engineers turned waste water from a repulsive pollutant and a health hazard into a central pillar of Israeli agriculture; and how desalination of Mediterranean sea water finally went from a dream to a reality in just the last few years. This is truly a feel-good story. But Siegel also sheds light on some dark times and some dark issues. His chapter on the pollution of virtually all of Israel's rivers is heartbreaking, and he doesn't spare us the deaths of 4 Maccabiah games athletes who were poisoned falling into the muck of what was left of the Yarkon River in Tel Aviv. Siegel also makes an important case for Ben-Gurion's nationalization of every drop of water in the country (including the rain falling on your roof) in 1959. This nationalization may have saved Israel, but Siegel also reminds us that until new legislation in 2007, Israeli municipalities used their income from nationalized water resources as a slush fund to subsidize crony politics, rather than fixing badly decaying water delivery systems.Under Siegel's light and witty pen, all of this come's off as hugely entertaining, and leaves you with the feeling that you're learning things that everyone really should just know. This is not to say that the book is without flaws. First, most readers will probably want to know which Israeli political leaders took responsibility and made the tough decisions to turn their country into a water-rich nation--as well as who opposed them. But while Siegel does mention some names (Baiga Schochat, Ariel Sharon) in passing, his book disappointingly shies away from really giving us a picture of the political struggles at the top that led to this miracle. Second, Siegel's overwhelmingly positive outlook may leave some readers feeling like important things are being swept under the rug. Siegel asserts that the socialized water system was free from corruption, for instance, but there are points in the book where you begin to feel that things couldn't have been quite that peachy. On the whole, it is rare to find a book that's as slam-dunk worth reading as this one is. It's a pleasure and you end up knowing an ocean of things you never thought you'd care about--but which, Siegel convincingly proves, are really among the most important things in the world.Yoram HazonyThe Herzl Institute, Jerusalem

Something in the water By David Wineberg When you realize that Israel exports two billion dollars’ worth of water from a tiny desert state overflowing with people, it might be instructive to know what it is they’re doing. Seth Siegel’s book is an in-depth, tightly focused and exhaustive look at the totality of what the country has accomplished in water. There are three basic levels to the story. PEOPLE must be conscious of their water consumption and actively minimize it. The need has forced TECHNOLOGY to take leaps and bounds that have vaulted Israel to world leadership in water management. And unusually, there is the POLITICAL WILLl to manage natural resources nationwide for the benefit of all, even to the point of co-operating regionally. With these three arms working together, and the only place on earth where all three are firing in sync, Israel is the poster child for survival. On the people level, everyone shuts off showers while soaping up, closes taps when teethbrushing, and uses dual flush toilets Israel pioneered. Flow restrictors are on all showers, lush gardens are actively discouraged. On the tech level, Israelis invented and perfected drip irrigation - to where crops need a fraction of the water (and fertilizer) that flood or spray irrigation requires, and produce more. Israel has pioneered improvements in desalination, allowing it to let lakes and rivers recover naturally while desalination provides the country’s water – to the tune of more than 90%.In management, Israel recycles 85% of sewage (vs 8% in the USA). and sends it to agriculture. Even toilet paper is recovered and recycled, reducing landfill and increasing processing capacity by 30%. Israel is now actually short of sewage, because people have so reduced their water consumption. The country has done deals regionally, pumping Lake Galilee water to Jordan in exchange for a desalination plant on Jordanian territory in the Gulf of Aqaba. Leaks have been reduced to about 16%, because water authorities monitor all systems continuously.Even before its founding, leaders knew water was the number one priority. The British refused to allow greater immigration because there wasn’t enough water to support the local population. At that time the population was little more than half a million. Today it is 20 times higher, and Israel exports water.Despite Israel’s pariah status globally, Israeli water technologies and strategies are finding their way into Africa, Asia and America, as water shortages become the norm. The book is straightforward, if a little fawning. Siegel avoids the Dead Sea disaster, in which 95% of the Jordan River is diverted, and the Dead Sea is losing three feet a year. It’s to the point where shoreline hotels now must run shuttle buses to the shore. He keeps to his topic, and holds interest with results, since there are so many substantial ones to describe. He addresses the elephant in the room - the Palestinian situation - but as ever, there is no meeting of the minds. Still, 96% of West Bank Palestinians have state-provided clean water, where none had it before.Let There Be Water is a blueprint for survival: necessary, critical, successful, and replicable.David Wineberg

I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs.”—Isaiah 41:18As 2015 winds down, and we look backward on history’s hottest recorded summer ever, perhaps it’s time to consider the future. As entrepreneur and philanthropist Seth Siegel writes, changing rain patterns severely threaten human populations. The California drought offers a foretaste of impending crop failures, urban stresses, and ecological catastrophe. Siegel directs our attention to the one nation with a long history of forward-thinking water policies: Israel. The state of Israel has pioneered important advances in how to use and improve our water consumption since before the state existed. They've developed ways of moving water from where it exists to where the people need it, allowing high-yield agriculture in regions traditionally arid, even in historic deserts. They’ve improved water use techniques, increasing farm yields with less water, while cities consume less, leaving farmers and wildernesses more.Siegel provides an intriguing mix of history and science, describing not only what advances Israel has made in water management, but also why it made particular advances. He describes the unique political, economic, and geographic pressures shaping Israeli water policy. The mix of intense regional water close to lifeless desert was, recently, almost unique to Israel. But as Siegel notes, if environmental trends continue, similar conditions may soon exist globally.First, Israeli culture doesn’t disparage water. Children never sing “Rain, rain, go away.” Israel nationalizes water access, making all water everywhere a common good. While American libertarians campaign to repeal laws against rainwater collection, Israel maintains a strict enforcement policy: rain barrels aren’t a right. Hoarding or misusing water isn’t abstract moral wrong; Israel considers water abuse theft from the people, and prosecutes water hogs accordingly.Because water is scarce and distributed unequally by nature, sharing and distributing water has the same aura of civic responsibility in America that we get from, say, joining the military. Responsible water use isn’t some mere principle; it’s a foundation of common civic government. By basing much public philosophy on communal responsibility to water, Israel’s government might superficially resemble American conservatism; but it expresses very different impulses in actual policy. But Israel couples this nationalizing with incentives for more egalitarian, democratic water management techniques. According to Siegel, much municipal water in Europe and America gets lost to leakage, but Israel has created technologies designed specifically to curtail leaks and limit mechanical waste. Especially since home leaks often aren’t noticeable until they’ve created significant structural damage, the shift to preventative identification has both public and private benefits.Israeli engineers, working through public-private partnerships, have invented more intense, ecologically specific irrigation technologies: Siegel extols drip irrigation, invented in Israel and now more commonly being adopted in other nations and continents. Israeli agronomists have created new plant variants that put more growth into edible fruits and flesh, less into inedible stems and foliage. This boosts agricultural yield from limited water applications, costing less in transpiration and wastage.Israel’s National Water Carrier, which moves water from the moister north to the arid south with minimal evaporation, rivals the Interstate Highway System as a marvel of public-spirited engineering. Israel has found ways to recycle urban wastewater into clean, fresh irrigation, and connect water where it is with soil where water’s needed. Siegel describes the public commitment to water in ways familiar to Americans praising George Washington every July 4th.This book describes technologies, social movements, and other important forces in language accessible to non-specialist readers. He describes very intricate advances in aquifer management, farming, and sewage removal, without bogging down in terminology. Siegel’s storytelling resembles a novel: much like Leon Uris, he makes Israeli history moving and alive. He’s just discussing water, and water policy, rather than war.Siegel delves into the history of Israel’s water consumption style. It didn’t just intend to create better water usage; many of its techniques were invented to facilitate land grabs in places like the Negev before Partition in 1948. Some readers might find the political opportunism distasteful, and the implications for Palestinians who farm in more time-honored ways has harsh undertones, but Siegel spotlights the advances themselves, not transnational politics.Informed readers realize water management issues aren’t one nation’s problem anymore. Droughts in California and floods in Texas signal new times for handling clean, drinkable water. Siegel’s descriptions of Israeli advances give world peoples hope that, as climate changes, human ingenuity can manage these changes proactively.

By Jessica L Sankiewicz My Thoughts:After discovering Stefanie London from the first Behind the Bar novel, The Rules According to Gracie, I can't stop myself from standing by with grabby hands for the next book. When I found out about the second book in the series AND that it was going to feature a fake relationship (that trope is like chocolate to me), I knew I needed it straight away!I was charmed by both Libby and Paul from the very start. They have their own goals--hers is to get her product off the ground and his is to get his family to stop bugging him about getting married. Although they claim their fake relationship is all for show, their chemistry charges in to tell them otherwise. While I adored the romance (because it was a HECK of a hot romance), I think what I loved most was the unwavering support they had for each other. They both had their strengths and weaknesses, and each of them knew how to bring out the best in the other. Which is what made the romance more than just a fling for show.Pretend It's Love was a delightfully endearing love story! I seriously couldn't stop loving Libby and Paul. The growth in the characters was believable, and their interactions super sweet. Paul's insistence on the nickname he gave Libby (Tiger) was both funny and lovely. Can I have more Stefanie London books NOW, please and thank you very much?My Rating: Very Good

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Sweet & Sexy By Jaime Collins 4.5 StarsI admit, this story started off a little slow for me but at about 15% in, it got interesting and then I couldn't put it down. This story was sexy, sweet and just the slightest bit infuriating and I loved every second of it.Paul, despite what he thought of himself, was so sweet and so supportive and inspiring. His family, as pushy and intrusive as they could be, love him with everything they have and just want the best for him but he can't help but feel judged by them and inferior to his "perfect" brother. Libby was so much fun and I love the fact that she is starting up her own infused vodka brand. I didn't like her father, not in the slightest bit. Feeling unloved and unwanted by her parents has Libby guarding her heart and focusing on being successful. Love just lets you down. The two of them are perfect together and bring out the best parts of each other. They have this awesome chemistry and there is a natural ease to their friendship that makes it inevitable that they end up together. If you love sweet, sexy fake-to-real romances then this is definitely a story you should pick up. The writing is on point and the characters are well-developed and relatable. I will absolutely be going back to read book one in the series and any books that follow.*I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

I love well-written pretend relationships By Live Laugh & Love Books I love well-written pretend relationships, and this one didn’t disappoint!Libby is a great leading lady and Paul is a wonderful match! She’s driven to succeed and he is just trying to get his family off his back, together they make such a dynamic duo and the chemistry is sizzling hot! Of course they can’t keep their hands off of each other, even though they set ‘rules’. HA, who needs rules anymore!?A romance isn’t great without a grand gesture and this book has the best grand gesture EVER! I won’t spoil it for you here, but just know that this moment in the book is worth the wait. I’m not ashamed to admit that I swooned…I became completely love struck! This book hits all the needed emotional parts and does it so well that it sucks you in and doesn’t let you put it down. This is my first book by Stefanie London and it certainly won’t be my last, her writing is amazing!*I received a complimentary copy of the book from Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.*

If I had one complaint it would be that it was too short, I wanted MORE!!! LOL Riverbend was sweet and refreshing. My heart really went out to Mitchem and Cynthia they were both pretty much clueless of what the other person felt. Of course Mitchem is still trying to live in the past and is not sure if he's ready to move on but once he realizes things he knows he cant live with out the one that's been standing in front of him this whole time but it just might be too late. Cynthia has been chasing Mitchem for far too long and she cant stand by and wait any longer and is debating whether or not she should just move on. I really loved reading Riverbend and am now excited to read more by Ciara Knight!

It's a very sweet read about a professor, Dr. Mitchum Taylor, who after losing his wife, never really got in to the dating life again. He and his young son seem content with life as it is. Or so he thought. After being pushed by his friends to start dating again he realizes there isn't anyone he's interested in, well, other than his devoted assistant Cynthia. Can he convince her to give himself and his son a shot or has he waited too long??I recommend this one.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Short, sweet, and clean Romance By Lillian @ Mom with a Reading Problem Riverbend by Ciara Knight is the prequel to her new series by the same name. Set in a little town an hour or so away from Creekside (see her Sweetwater County series), Cynthia Gold came to Riverbend to make her dreams come true. But four years later, she’s ready to leave with a broken heart. Will the man she loves realize he loves her too or is time for her to leave it all behind? This short story packs a big punch! Cynthia is a sweet character. She’s kind, loving, loyal, and has always been on the sidelines of Dr. Mitchem Taylor. As his assistant, she does everything she can to make life (personal and professional) easier for him. She’s even come to love his son Andy as her own. Yet she’s nursed her love for him for four years, waiting to see if he would love her in return.Dr. Mitchem Taylor is a widower, still grieving the loss of his wife four years prior. He’s smart, kind, a bit shy, and without the push of his best friend wouldn’t look at Cynthia as datable. But once the idea is in his head, he knows he doesn’t want anyone else. His big problem is how best to communicate that and keep their jobs as it is against the rules for them to date.Overall this is a short, clean romance. You could easily read this in one sitting. In just over 60 pages the author packs a lot of emotion. Yes friends, I teared up and cried just a little. If you enjoy the author’s Sweetwater County series or you’re looking for a quick read for you weekend, I highly recommend this one.

Enjoy the pride of ownership, turn a blind eye to the instant depreciation of a vehicle that comes with knobby tires, and be aware of what that brand new bike needs.  PREP Most bikes need more grease on the steering stem, linkage, and swingarm bearings. While you’re at it, work a dab of anti-seize grease into the rear axle adjustment bolt threads.  MAINTENANCE Air filter oil migrates down. Check that the top of the filter is tacky with oil and re-oil it with air filter oil if it is dry on the top. Stock chains stretch quickly, so put on a top-of-the-line chain right away to save money on sprockets in the long run.  BREAK-IN A good common-sense break-in is to give the engine a heat cycle. Get it up to operating temperature on the stand, then let it cool. Don’t lug the engine in a gear too high for the first rides or scream it in a gear too low. Suspension breaks in, too. Watch the shock sag and keep it adjusted where you want it.

Mcclain As an older dirt rider I bought this to reacquaint myself with the more current trends in dirt biking and off roading. This appears to be geared toward the novice rider or someone thinking of buying a dirt bike for the first time. That's fine as I haven't had an off road motorcycle in over twenty years. This has some great illustrations and is a nicely presented package. Won't make you an expert but gives you a basic foundation for you to gain additional information and experience. I enjoyed the suspension explanations as that has changed and improved a great deal during my time away from the sport. Worth the price.

Perfect hit!!

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. THE introduction to Processing! By renaissance geek Once upon a time, far too many years ago to think about, I was a young nerd at school. I loved the sciences, but I also loved the arts and for a while that was fine. The trouble was once I hit that point where they start giving you careers talks I had to make a decision as to whether I was going to be an arts person or a sciences person. It was a strictly binary choice, no shades of grey allowed. I went the sciences route but I’ve always rather pined for the arts. Things are improving and now there’s a burgeoning community of tech-artists who blend the best that art and digital tools have to offer and one of the digital tools finding favour is Processing. If Processing is new to you, it’s an open source programming language and environment developed for use by designers and artists. It’s used in both video arts and as a tool in producing interactive installations. The language itself is built on Java (though a much simplified version) and was used as a basis for the Arduino programming environment, so if you’ve used either of these you will find it familiar. Whether it’s completely new or not The Sparkfun Guide To Processing is well worth a look. The book is project driven and split into 14 chapters each with its own project, which gives you something to show at the end of each one. (You can download the code samples in the book via https://www.nostarch.com/sparkfunprocessing but I think that you get a better learning experience if you type it in and debug your errors, yourself.) The chapters follow the same structure: an introduction to the topic; an overview of the Processing concepts to be used; a walk through the project code and finally some pointers on how to extend the project. So far, so traditional. Where the book really shines is in its explanations of the conceptual underpinnings of the Processing language. I’ve used Processing a bit before and have some more in depth books on the language but this one clearly explains some of the underlying principles that I had failed to wrap my head around; there were more than a few eureka moments. I’m firmly of the opinion that you can do much more with a sound grounding in the principles of a language than just by knowing the syntax so this book really worked for me.Content-wise, you get a pretty thorough grounding in what you need to get started. The book starts with installation and drawing simple images before moving onto dynamic and interactive art. From there it moves onto slightly more complex areas such as working with text, processing images and manipulating video. Part of the utility of Processing is not just what it can do out of the box but also using the copious available libraries, working with external data sources and connecting it to other pieces of hardware. These are covered by projects using the Minim sound library, reading and using JSON format data and interfacing with Arduino.Of course no book is perfect and there are a few minor quibbles with The Sparkfun Guide To Processing. Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, there’s a big strip across the back saying “Covers Processing 2”; Processing is now in version 3. In all fairness, the first full release of Processing 3 was after the book’s release, but it has been in beta for a while now. This shouldn’t be a problem as everything in the book seems to work with Processing 3; but it may put off some users who might think that they are buying an obsolete product. Secondly the coverage of object oriented programming is scant to the point of being non-existent. There is an excellent description of what classes and objects are but you never actually write either, which is missing a powerful part of the language. You don’t actually need to write in an object oriented way to get things done in Processing but it does make things easier when you work with larger and more complex programs. Finally, some of the final chapter on hooking processing up to an Arduino is specific to a Sparkfun product (perhaps not unreasonably as this is The Sparkfun Guide To Processing) but I would have preferred to see it address the vanilla Arduino board.Quibbles aside, this is the best introduction to Processing I’ve seen. In fact I may go as far as to say it’s the best introduction to any programming language I’ve seen. It’s clear, concise and engagingly written. If you thinking about getting into digital art then this book definitely deserves a place on your bookshelf. In summary, all I can say is arty nerdy types rejoice; someone’s got your back! Bravo for No Starch Press; bravo for Sparkfun and most of all bravo for Derek Runberg.

By Eric Forte "The SparkFun guide to Processing" is a project-based book for the Processing language. Processing is a Java-based programming language that runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OSX with which one can manipulate images, draw graphics on computer screens, even communicate with Arduino microcontrollers. The book is organized like a technological cookbook where each chapter's recipe builds on the lessons learned from the previous one. Much of the material is culled from a class the author taught to middle schoolers and one could definitely see it being used even in an introductory college class or in a community "Maker" course. The book is a well-written collaboration between No Starch Press and SparkFun Electronics and its usage of graphics and code make it, quite frankly, a gorgeous technology book worth having. In the interest of disclosure, I received a review copy of this title from the publish, No Starch Press.

Great Resource for Teachers and Hobbyists interested in STEAM and Maker Movement By Matthieu Smith Derek has created a great resource for the classroom teacher or "maker". I teach a digital art class to high schoolers. One of my goals is to encourage my art students to create interactive and kinetic artwork utilizing coding and robotics. This book is a GREAT resource for anyone who wants to explore these topics. It is written simply (good mix of technical descriptions and verbiage that is approachable to the complete beginner). This can be used as a text book that your students can work independently and develop their knowledge in their own way.

Although slightly less in-depth than I would like, it does an excellent job of explaining cardiac pathophysiology. Explanations are concise, easily understood, relatively complete, and written in an easy, conversational style. I think this book is likely geared best towards students in their first two years, but still taught me some new things and helped reinforce my understanding of cardiac diseases.

By Sean Hancock I have owned more than a couple of the editions of this fine book. I have always considered it to be perhaps the best "Intro to Cardiology" book that I have recommended to many classmates or colleagues. Lilly does an outstanding job of boiling down the vast subject of cardiology and producing an easy to read book that includes all the various subjects that one needs to know when dealing with cardiovascular patients. The chapter on pharmacology is probably the best synopsis of cardiovascular drugs I have ever read (yes, I have actually read previous editions of this book from cover to cover). The perfect book for anyone who is looking at working with cardiology patients, whether in the clinic or on the wards.

Go to cardiology book By DRSOY When using this book together with Robbins & Cotran for Heart Pathology, you get a really good understanding of the heart and its many intricacies. Lilly's book is better than Guyton, Costanzo (her text), or any other physiology text when it comes to cardiology. It is also written in a language that is easily grasped, plus the figures in color are excellent.Best book of all medical books

Read Ebook One Year After: A John Matherson NovelBy William R. Forstchen

New York Times bestselling author William R. Forstchen brings a sequel to his hit novel One Second After. Months before publication, One Second After was cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read, a book discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a truly realistic look at the dangers of EMPs. An EMP is a weapon with the power to destroy the entire United States in a single act of terrorism, in a single second; indeed, it is a weapon that the Wall Street Journal warns could shatter America. One Second After was a dire warning of what might be our future...and our end. Now, One Year After returns to the small town of Black Mountain, and the man who struggled so hard to rebuild it in the wake of devastation-John Matherson. It is a thrilling follow-up and should delight fans in every way.

I live in Black Mountain, North Carolina, the village where Forstchen has set his story about a community struggling to survive after an EMP attack devastates the United States. Forstchen truly captured the feel of our town, the people, the way they would react, the way they think and talk, and how a small Southern town could indeed band together to help each other get through a crisis. He did his research well on that. This book is definitely another five star job by Forstchen. The sequel, One Second After deals with the first year after an EMP attack and focuses on how the total destruction of our electrical infrastructure would forever change our lives, and the reality of how so many experts predict that at least 4 out 5 Americans would die in the months after our nation is destroyed by the detonation of just several small nuclear weapons about the atmosphere that then wipes out our electrical infrastructure. One Year After picks the story up, literally, a year after the end of his first novel. The author explores “what happens next,” a question nearly all fans of his first book have asked. It is one thing to survive that first terrible year, but Forstchen now takes us to the next level. . .we survived but now what in hell do we do? Do we continue to let our nation slide into a final decline and oblivion? Do we hand off to our children and grandchildren a society left in wreckage, the way the descendants of what had been the Roman empire gazed at the ruins about them as they lived in squalor? Or do we band together and start to try and rebuild? The fascinating question Forstchen presents is exactly how do we rebuild? Do we sit back and wait for FEMA to one day show up and rescue us (it is obvious that Forstchen must have been thinking about Katrina and Sandy when dealing with this question) or do we roll up our sleeves and get to work? One plot detail I will give away, which is not a spoiler, is that the main character, John Matherson, is suffering from an infected tooth when the story opens. Anyone who harbors some crazed nostalgia that life must have been simpler and thus happier back in the “good ole days” should read this book while suffering from a tooth ache and contemplate how such things were dealt with! That alone leads Forstchen, who has a Ph.D. in history with a specialization in the history of technology, into an interesting subplot asking if enough local knowledge is out there to make anesthesia, pain killers, and the antibiotics we take for granted. It is but one of many questions Forstchen presents to us to ponder on, and shows yet again how we take the wonders of modern technology for granted. The book also moves more into political questions of how to rebuild rather than the harsher issues of brutal day to day survival he wrote about in book one, but that I see as a strength as he opens up the next chapter of the story about the town of Black Mountain and can it survive.A final political observation, a reality check here. Read the novels, then read the news. Is our country really going to turn a blind eye to the nuclear ambitions of Iran? An EMP hit is a first strike weapon. The results of its use, literally thousands of times worse than what we endured on 9/11. Our leaders, (who would be safe in their bunkers if we were ever attacked) actually tell us not to worry about the deal with Iran? Does anyone recall twenty years ago when the leadership then said not to worry about North Korea’s nuclear ambitions? I am writing this review on Sept. 16th, and just this morning I read where North Korea announced it is building yet more bombs and will soon demonstrate its ICBM capacity. ICBM plus a nuclear warhead equals EMP, which equals the nightmare Forstchen is trying to warn us about. Read and take heed.

I really wanted to find out how the characters fared as time went by, as well as the evolution of the local politics. It was exciting to be taken back to Black Mountain, NC to continue the adventure. As usual, Forstchen kept me riveted to the book and introduces new and interesting characters. Old enemies become new friends. New conflicts. New battles. I enjoyed the strife between our heroes and the "Big City" of Ashville. The locals are faced with possible anarchy or fascist rule. Stcik together or perish fighting among themselves. Overall, this book was an enjoyable experience. I will mention that, inevitably, "One Year After" does not have the same level of impact on current society as "One Second After". The naration of the actual effects of an EMP attack on modern day North Carolina was very powerful. But the continuation of the story allows us to follow characters that we already know and love. Or hate. Forstchen has a gift for bringing characters to life and creating realistic interpersonal adversities. His battle scenes always keep me on the edge of my seat. I always feel like I'm part of his stories. If you haven't read "One Second After" yet, by all means do. If you have then you will want to follow up with "One Year After".

An Uncomfortable New World By Spudman At times during "One Second After" it feels like an invisible hand is reaching into your chest, squeezing your heart, and threatening to rip it out. It's an intense book that can leave one breathless. One Year After continues the saga of the Black Mountain community and Will Matherson's friends, and family after the Day. Those who have read the first of the series will pick up where they left off with anticipation and perhaps dread of further heartbreak and suffering for the characters they've grown to know. The beginning of One Year After doesn't quite equal the intensity of the first book; in fact its low key beginning can lull the reader into a false complacency. With a duplicitous villain emerging representing the new order of the new government, the plot and pathos heighten to a climax that totally absorbs the reader. If you read One Second After, you do want to read this sequel . For those who haven't read One Second After (you really should) there are enough flashbacks in One Year After to make plot action understandable and characters and motives familiar. This Potato Head would love to see a schematic of the town and area to be able to visualize the geography of the story; the logistics of place are so important that Black Mountain itself almost becomes an integral character in the story. When landmark buildings in Black Mountain are destroyed, the reader is saddened.Bottom line - Perhaps not the equal to the first in the three part series, but a thrill ride in and of itself with a bit of mystery and suspense. I'm already looking forward to the third installment and perhaps an explanation of those cryptic messages ending the BBC broadcasts.
