52 of 54 people found the following review helpful. And dangerously beautiful. Hawker does a great job giving us insight ... By Eugene Scott Petty has been held captive by her father for years and when he dies of a heart attack, she bounces between mourning and rejoicing. She is at a loss as to what to do. The stipulations in her father's will soon decide the matter for her. She runs, armed and dangerous, pursuing answers to her many questions about why her father controlled her every move and who her family really is. She is pursued by her father's only friend, a militia nut, and the police. From that moment on, the chase is tense and heart rending. Not only must Petty remain free (and alive) but she must navigate a world she has only seen on reruns on TV. The real world is much more unpredictable and cruel. And dangerously beautiful.Hawker does a great job giving us insight into Petty's struggle (internal and external) while keeping the pages turning as if blown by a fan motor. The twists and turns surprise and delight. Petty is both tender and terrifyingly tough. Dekker, her unwilling companion, seems to need to hold her and hold a gun on her. Despite all this, Petty charges ahead into an inevitable collision with her past. But this is not only a well written chase story with high stakes. It is a parable about life fifteen years into our fear riddled century. Petty has been convinced that the only response to life is fear and to arm against it. So too are many of us who watch the news or listen to politicians. Fear locks us in every night. We are succored on a false view of life that keeps us worrying about lies and/or things that are opposite from what we've been told. Today's parents especially are warned that every stranger is danger, that many foods are poison, and that life outside the house is risky at best. In many ways we are Petty. And like her we need to find the truth no matter how dangerous.

It's been a while since I found a book I truly couldn't put down, and this was just that. The Drowning Game is full of unexpected twists, authentic emotions, and characters who made me laugh, cry, and think. I can't wait to read more from this author.

22 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Reviews from the Heart Review By Julie This is one of the best books I’ve read in quite a while! This is a dark read that covers subjectmatter that some may find offensive, but it is extremely well written and handled so well that I literallycould not put this book down! When I first started reading this I was honestly a little apprehensive aboutreading this book since the entire situation seems a bit off from page one and only gets stranger fromthere. Keep reading! I am so thankful that I stuck with this story and kept reading as this is honestly oneof the best stories I’ve read this entire year! Petty and her father have lived isolated from the rest ofsociety and live a survivalist lifestyle to the extreme. Petty has been trained by her father rather thanraised as most little girls are. She has been trained to be lethal and efficient and has learned never totrust anyone under any circumstances. He has taught her that the world is a dangerous place and evengoes to the extreme of locking her in her bedroom each and every night under the guise of keeping hersafe. This is the only life Petty has ever known and she has absolutely no idea that her life is far fromnormal. They live on the outskirts of a small town and are known as the town crazies. Everything goesalong fine for Petty until she discovers her father’s dead body in his bed one night and everything goesoff the rails from that point for her. The police have to be called in to collect her father’s body and theone friend her father actually had shows up to help Petty take care of the funeral arrangements. He hasulterior motives that are seedy and malicious and I hate him from the second he graces the pages of thisstory. The things he does to Petty are horrible and I found myself truly wishing for bad things to happento this disgusting excuse for a man the entire book!My heart broke over and over for Petty for everything she’s gone through and I love herstrength and determination to make it through whatever life throws at her. She is a truly inspiringindividual and I found myself wanting something good to finally happen for her. Dekker is a localresident of the small town Petty lived in and he gets pulled into her strange and twisted world and takenon this life changing adventure with her. Petty is going through so many journeys simultaneously andmanages to hold herself together stoically through it all.. She’s on a mission to find herself, to traceherself back to her roots and to figure out where she fits in this crazy world and I enjoyed every secondof reading about it. This is an extremely intense read that grabbed a hold of me from page one and keptme on the edge of my seat until the very last page! I highly recommend this book to anyone and am sothankful that I got to read this. Books like this don’t come along every day.

With information on siting, planting, tending, harvesting, processing, and brewing

It’s hard to think about beer these days without thinking about hops.  The runaway craft beer market’s convergence with the ever-expanding local foods movement is helping to spur a local-hops renaissance. The demand from craft brewers for local ingredients to make beer―such as hops and barley―is robust and growing. That’s good news for farmers looking to diversify, but the catch is that hops have not been grown commercially in the eastern United States for nearly a century.  Today, farmers from Maine to North Carolina are working hard to respond to the craft brewers’ desperate call for locally grown hops. But questions arise: How best to create hop yards―virtual forests of 18-foot poles that can be expensive to build? How to select hop varieties, and plant and tend the bines, which often take up to three years to reach full production? How to best pick, process, and price them for market? And, how best to manage the fungal diseases and insects that wiped out the eastern hop industry 100 years ago, and which are thriving in the hotter and more humid states thanks to climate change? Answers to these questions can be found in The Hop Grower’s Handbook―the only book on the market about raising hops sustainably, on a small scale, for the commercial craft beer market in the Northeast.   Written by hop farmers and craft brewery owners Laura Ten Eyck and Dietrich Gehring, The Hop Grower’s Handbook is a beautifully photographed and illustrated book that weaves the story of their Helderberg Hop Farm with the colorful history of New York and New England hop farming, relays horticultural information about the unusual hop plant and the mysterious resins it produces that give beer a distinctively bitter flavor, and includes an overview of the numerous native, heirloom, and modern varieties of hops and their purposes. The authors also provide an easy-to-understand explanation of the beer-brewing process―critical for hop growers to understand in order be able to provide the high-quality product brewers want to buy―along with recipes from a few of their favorite home and micro-brewers. The book also provides readers with detailed information on:  •    Selecting, preparing, and designing a hop yard site, including irrigation; •    Tending to the hops, with details on best practices to manage weeds, insects, and diseases; and, •    Harvesting, drying, analyzing, processing, and pricing hops for market. The overwhelming majority of books and resources devoted to hop production currently available are geared toward the Pacific Northwest’s large-scale commercial growers, who use synthetic pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and fertilizers and deal with regionally specific climate, soils, weeds, and insect populations. Ten Eyck and Gehring, however, focus on farming hops sustainably. While they relay their experience about growing in a new Northeastern climate subject to the higher temperatures and volatile cycles of drought and deluge brought about by global warming, this book will be an essential resource for home-scale and small-scale commercial hops growers in all regions.

The Hop Grower's Handbook: The Essential Guide for Sustainable, Small-Scale Production for Home and MarketBy Laura Ten Eyck, Dietrich Gehring

Review

Publishers Weekly-

"Hops is a powerful medicinal plant that has been used for millennia for a variety of ailments (it is a member of the Cannabaceae family―the same family as cannabis). Recently, hops has become the go-to plant for brewing beer, according to authors Ten Eyck and Gehring, home brewing enthusiasts and owners of the Helderberg Hop Farm in upstate New York. As the authors explain, hops provides the botanical element in beer that offsets the sweet sugars and malts with that hint of bitterness, or bite, that really makes the beer. It also helps head retention and acts as a preserving agent. This book provides a great deal of information about this botanical prize, including tips for selecting the best site to grow it, optimal trellising, controlling insects, harvesting, and drying. The authors also guide would-be brewers through the pricing, packaging, and sale of hops, and include some recipes. This is an indispensable resource for the prospective microbrewer and a great study of the wonders of this little-known plant.”

“While driving on rural roads in the northeastern United States, if you look carefully you may notice wild hop vines twining their way up utility poles and signposts, feral reminders of a once-thriving hop industry and a time when brewing and the production of the raw materials used in beermaking were both local endeavors. And while craft brewers helped launch the local food movement over three decades ago, the local production of brewing ingredients has lagged behind. The Hop Grower’s Handbook, packed with research and practical advice, is an invaluable tool for reuniting regional brewers with regional growers. This delightful and useful book should be part of any brewer’s or small-scale farmer’s essential library.”--Peter Egelston, founder and president, Smuttynose Brewing Company

“Hop to it―but not so fast! It’s best to learn from the trials and travails of the pioneers who have somehow busted through what recent generations have considered an impasse: growing the hops for truly local beer and reviving a commercial hop industry in parts of the United States that a century ago caved to the success of growers in other, far-flung regions. A how-to guide without a narrative of successes, failures, and subsequent innovations is a recipe for disaster, not to mention boredom. Laura Ten Eyck and Dietrich Gehring lived and share the compelling story of the recent resurgence of hop production in the Northeast―a high-flying grassroots movement bringing together hopophiles, dusted-off texts of a bygone era, terroir aficionados, cutting-edge farmers, and creative extension agents. Their book elevates hops knowledge to a new level while making even the most far-reaching possibilities tenable. Prost to the plant ready to take over and offer yet another convivial contribution to our local food―and drink―renaissance! Hop, hop, hoorah!”--Philip Ackerman-Leist, author of Rebuilding the Foodshed

“The Hop Grower’s Handbook is a fantastic source of information that will absolutely help revive the small-scale hop-growing industry of New York and other eastern states. Ten Eyck and Gehring give experienced and novice farmers alike a structured plan to efficiently start and maintain a hop yard at the most ideal scale for today’s local hop markets. Farm brewers and microbreweries should be excited, as this book will surely help make locally grown hops more readily available in the coming years. The authors and their Indian Ladder Farmstead Brewery and Cidery have continued to stay ahead of the curve on hop growing, harvesting, and processing. The hard work and time put into this book benefits all of us in the small-scale brewing industry. As a Brooklyn-based brewer, I’m eager to watch the regrowth of a product with such heritage in the state of New York, and I look forward to making more great beers brewed with more quality, locally grown hops.”--Matt Monahan, co-founder and co-owner, Other Half Brewing Company

“How exciting to begin to see the principles of healthy growing brought to the hop yard! This handbook richly shares wisdom on hop horticulture as well as trellising, harvesting, and drying methods. But Ten Eyck and Gehring properly take the discussion further―weaving in biodiversity, disease acumen, and compost-based nutrition. Local brews deserve local hops, creating yet another quintessential niche for a savvy grower.”--Michael Phillips, author of The Holistic Orchard and coauthor of The Herbalist’s Way

“Beer from here! In their quest to re-establish hop growing in the Northeast, Laura Ten Eyck and Dietrich Gehring have compiled a holistic and adventuresome volume. We all benefit from their curiosity and action-research tactics. The local beer and brewery scene is heating up fast, and demand for local ingredients will continue to grow. I urge young farmers to study up and get in on the action!”--Severine von Tscharner Fleming, director, Greenhorns

“Given the recent explosion of hop production in the Northeast, new growers are frantically looking for information. So, welcome to The Hop Grower’s Handbook―the only book covering practical hops production in the region. A timely and highly valuable resource for growers!”--Heather Darby, agronomy specialist, University of Vermont

“If you want to grow hops, read this book through, then put it on your nightstand and read it every night to remind yourself of what’s coming next. It’s a seriously informative and surprisingly engaging book, full of resources and wise advice about all phases of growing, harvesting, and selling the buds that flavor the brew.”--Joan Dye Gussow, author of Growing, Older and This Organic Life

“I have spent the last several years working with an eclectic  group of new hop growers, including Ten Eyck and Gehring, in New York and other eastern states. Up until now I have had to tell them that there is no ‘cookbook’ for growing hops on a smaller, but commercial, scale. There is much information on the Internet―but most is anecdotal, unproven, and geared toward backyard home-brew enthusiasts. Now I can point people to this well-thought-out and informative publication. This is a great step forward for the new hop industry!”--Steve Miller, hops specialist, Cornell University

About the Author

Laura Ten Eyck owns and operates Helderberg Hop Farm and Indian Ladder Farmstead Brewery and Cidery with her husband, Dietrich Gehring. The two have been growing hops and brewing beer at home for more than twenty-five years and have been working to restore local hop production in the northeast. Helderberg Hop Farm is located on 60 acres of Indian Ladder Farms, an extensive pick-your-own orchard with a local foods grocery, bakery, café, and retail gift shop in upstate New York that Ten Eyck previously managed. The orchard has been in Ten Eyck’s family for four generations, and she and Gehring have lived there for more than twenty-five years, growing fruits and vegetables for sale to restaurants, gardening extensively, and raising sheep for meat and wool, dairy goats for milk, and chickens for eggs and meat. Ten Eyck is also senior manager of New York Outreach and Projects at American Farmland Trust, a nonprofit where she advocates for national and regional farmland conservation, and was previously a freelance journalist.

Laura lives on the Helderberg Hop Farm in Altamont, New York.

Dietrich Gehring is a small-scale commercial hop grower, professional photographer, home brewer, and co-owner, with Laura Ten Eyck, of Helderberg Hop Farm and Indian Ladder Farmstead Brewery and Cidery.  Helderberg Hop Farm, located outside the City of Albany in upstate New York, is a 60-acre farm growing barley, hops, apples, pumpkins, and blueberries. Gehring grew up working on his grandparents’ dairy farm, attended the New England School of Art and Design, and went on to pursue a career in photography while working as a photo editor for Animals magazine and Workman Publishing, editing the Audubon and Greenpeace photo calendar series, among others.  He is a photographer of agricultural and natural landscapes, selling his work through galleries and to individuals. He has photographed all manner of farms ranging from apple orchards and vegetable and sunflower farms to cattle, sheep, goat, pig, and poultry farms. His work has been published in numerous magazines and can be viewed online at www.dietrichgehring.com. Gehring’s long love of hops and brewing began decades ago, when he was sales manager for Newman’s Albany Brewing Company, one of the first craft breweries in the United States.  It was here that he learned how to brew beer and market it locally. He has worked in Boston, Massachusetts, and New York’s Capital Region selling high-end imported and domestic beers, as well as in specialty stores in the Boston area offering a wide selection of craft beer.

Dietrich lives on the Helderberg Hop Farm in Altamont, New York.

It's like I'm reading a buzzfeed article with adblock turned off. If you guys want to saturate your almanac with advertisements at least make it so they are at least removable. That being said, the information presented is nice, clear, and simple. There's a lot of good information towards the end I would five star this if I didn't have to wade trough so many ads.

By Jack Douglas This year, instead of getting an eBook on Kindle, I got the hardback like I used to a few years ago. Much, much better. The charts are readable and they are all over the place. Chunk full of useful information and folklore along with the sciences and fun filled trivia facts. There are a lot of advertising on these pages, but that doesn't bother me much. Only thing is the book has a little over 300 pages, so if one does not like the adverts, there is only 150-200 useful pages in here, all in a hardback for less than $15.00! It is a bargain, no matter how one slices and dices it. Numerous recipes, odd facts about the history of horse breeding, how tides impact fishing, how El Nino impacts the winter and starting on page 230, there is a story about "Typhoid Mary," the "Most Dangerous Woman in America."I have mentioned the charts and how they are everywhere in this almanac. Starting on page 118 and going through to page 152, there is the monthly calendars with all the astronomical insights and astrological tidbits, weather folklore and things to look out for. The calendars start with November 2015 and go to December 2016. Starting on page 273 and going on to the end of the almanac are numerous reference charts and tables. Easy to use and understand. The Weather pages start at page 189 and goes for about 20 onward. All these are easy to find because the Almanac has black tabs on the edges of those pages, so just look to the pages and you will quickly find them.I am so glad I got this in the hardback. For just a few dollars more, but this edition will last for a long, long time. I can lay the almanac down flat and the pages will stay flat -- they won't fall back on each other. The pages are also sewed and glued together, so this publication will be standing long after it's time is up. There is nothing that beats an almanac and the "Old Farmer's" is the cream of the crop!It is nice to be part of an old Tradition here in North America. This one lasted for centuries and still continues to the unforeseeable future!

"This is teaching at its best!"--Hans Camenzind, inventor of the 555 timer (the world's most successful integrated circuit), and author of Much Ado About Almost Nothing: Man's Encounter with the Electron (Booklocker.com)

"A fabulous book: well written, well paced, fun, and informative. I also love the sense of humor. It's very good at disarming the fear. And it's gorgeous. I'll be recommending this book highly."--Tom Igoe, author of Physical Computing and Making Things Talk

A "magnificent and rewarding book. ... Every step of this structured instruction is expertly illustrated with photos and crisp diagrams. . . . This really is the best way to learn."--Kevin Kelly, in Cool Tools

The first edition of Make: Electronics established a new benchmark for introductory texts. This second edition enhances that learning experience.

Here you will find unique, photographically precise diagrams of breadboarded components, to help you build circuits with speed and precision. A new shopping guide and a simplified range of components, will minimize your investment in parts for the projects. A completely new section on the Arduino shows you how to write properly structured programs instead of just downloading other people's code. Projects have been reworked to provide additional features, and the book has been restructured to offer a step-by-step learning process that is as clear and visually pleasing on handheld devices as it is on paper. Full color is used throughout.

As before, Make: Electronics begins with the basics. You'll see for yourself how components work--and what happens when they don't. You'll short out a battery and overheat an LED. You'll also open up a potentiometer and a relay to see what's inside. No other book gives you such an opportunity to learn from real-life experiences.

Ultimately, you will build gadgets that have lasting value, and you'll have a complete understanding of how they work. From capacitors to transistors to microcontrollers--it's all here.

Hans Camenzind, inventor of the 555 Timer (the world's most successful integrated circuit chip), said that "This is teaching at its best!" when he reviewed the first edition. Now the second edition offers even more!

This is the perfect introduction to hands-on electronics. I was an engineering student in college (although not electrical engineering) so I was always kind of upset that after spending countless nights of my life doing all sorts of crazy math problems with respect to circuits, I didn't know something as simple as how a relay works, or how to build anything except maybe a simple circuit with a lightbulb and a resistor. I could design and build an RC circuit and calculate its time-constant but why in God's name I would ever NEED to build an RC circuit was beyond me...No more. This book lets you know that its safe to rip open a relay and see exactly why it works. It will give you a circuit design and then have you build it. It will explain why something is or isn't working, and why. This won't make you an expert in electronics, it is definitely on the simple side of things (like algebraic simplifications of mathematical models that are actually rooted in calculus or differential equations), but that's exactly what I was looking for. This book will empower you to build things. I am reading it side by side with the Electricity & Magnetism chapters of my old Physics textbook so I can make the connections with the real theory and the nastier side of the math, but I really couldn't be happier. In spite of years of college, this book is just now making me feel like I know something about electronics. Also, I recommend buying the kit that's sold for this book because it will save you a little money and a LOT of time. Amazon has been out of stock of it forever, but I went to the closest Radioshack and they had it for $75. Other than that, you will need to buy Digital Multimeter, a pair of wire strippers that can deal with 22-gauge wire, a pair of wire-cutters, a pair of needlenose pliers, and a set of precision screw drivers. Seems steep but if you plan on making use of your new-found knowledge for the foreseeable future, you will be using these tools well after you've worked through this book.

It starts out basic enough that I would say an enthusiastic student in 4th grade or higher, with ample support from their parents could probably get into electronics as a hobby by beginning with this book. It is also suitable for much more advanced people if they are willing to skip the first third of so of the book where the basics are. I meet this category, since I'm a Mechanical Engineer (but importantly, not an Electrical Engineer), and I'm happy to have bought this book just the same.**Notable positive features**1.) This book is substantial. It has glossy pages, color photos, and is 325 pages long. The pictures are bright and sharp. This is the second edition, and the author described the things that have been improved from the first edition.2.) There's a lot of basic info for accommodating beginners, and a good brush-up course for more advanced people. It tells how to solder, identify resistors, install and use things like IC's and LED's without burning them out, etc. It tells the basic facts about electronic components, like what IC's, LEDs, and capacitors *are*. It recommends tools and where to get tools and equipment from. It encourages you to experiment in order to learn, like it tells you how to actually go burn up an LED just to see how much (or how little) abuse they can take.3.) It has helpful info to explain the subtle electrical engineering concepts that have always confused me, like the difference between a relay and a transistor, and what the three leads on transistors do. My college electronics textbooks didn't do a good job at this, so that's the sort of thing that I'm getting out of this book.4.) It has safety information. Soldering safety. Shock hazard safety. What you should and shouldn't be afraid of.5.) It doesn't jump into wiring diagrams instantly. It uses photos and other types of sketches for people who haven't mastered wiring diagrams yet.6.) It has little bits of electronics history in it in the form of photos of the scientists and engineers from history, and captions under the photo. This keeps things entertaining without filling the text with unwanted extra info.7.) There is information toward the end on how to program software for your own contraptions using Arduino, a fun, versatile, and cheap software that is good for programming robots and other things.8.) There are some neat example projects, including a crystal radio (a radio that doesn't need batteries).**Comparison to Hacking Electronics by Simon Monk**This book is pretty similar to Hacking Electronics by Simon Monk, and those interested in the topic at hand should consider both of these books. Both are well written, cover a similar spectrum of topics, have color photos, and have glossy pages. I would say both are equally good in writing and content *quality.* This book is slightly longer than the Monk book, and thus has more content, so I like it slightly more for that, because I'm a little more advanced, and I tend to want as much info as possible so I can use it as a reference or handbook. Finally, this book seems a little better for hardware tinkering people than the Monk book, since the Arduino part in this book comprises a smaller percentage of the whole book than in the Monk book.**Summary**If you want to get into tinkering with electronics for fun, or want to learn more about electronics via a "learn by doing" approach, this is definitely a good book. It starts out basic enough that you can probably start from the very ground level, with knowing almost nothing. I think this book would also be good if you are teaching grade school or middle school students about electronics. Finally, this book would be a good handbook for the shop of a maker, circuit bender, hobby roboticist, or anyone else that likes to tinker with electronics, and needs an occasional reminder about resister color codes, for example, or how to hook up transistors.I recommend this book with essentially no reservations!

This book is excellent, better than I could have hoped. I'm bright enough, know what a diode and capacitor do, but really know little about putting together any kind of circuit. But, you could start with less knowledge and be just fine with this book. The writing is detailed and interesting with background information to add interest, and the production of the book is fabulous. Each page looks great, looks of color, nothing intimidating. Of course, there will be thought required as you progress, and I can't say I've got a perfect handle on everything, but I can simply refer back to the book.As of my review, there isn't a "parts kit" for the Second Edition available yet, otherwise I would have bought it by now. (I'll watch for it, and buy it once available.) I have learned so much already, I can imagine trying to design experiments of my own, and being prepared to perhaps not get things right at first, test, analyze, correct, and proceed until I get it all working. I give high praise for a well written and beautifully designed/produced book.

After receiving her high school education in New Delhi, she did her undergraduate work at the University of Warwick (UK) and did her graduate work at Cornell University, earning a Masters in Public Administration. In this book, geared primarily for college and graduate students, but also appropriate for high school students, Ms. Mukherjee presents a detailed roadmap for how to do superior work in school. Her thesis is that what makes for an outstanding student is not native ability but the ability to study effectively. In this book, we are given 39 "tips" for learning how to study, how to prepare for exams, how to write papers, how to overcome procrastination, and, in general, how to get good grades. For example, we're told how to deal with distractions (such as email, phone calls, social media, etc.), how to break down larger assignments into smaller chunks, how to use small segments of time effectively, how to get help for understanding difficult material, how to prepare for and take an exam, and much more.Having spent much of my life in academia as a student or teacher, I can say with confidence that most of the advice given in this book is sound and, if followed, will increase a student's chances of doing extremely well in a course. Although some of what Ms. Mukherjee says was advice that I hadn't heard before, as I read the book I realized that to the extent that I had followed similar principles, they had added immeasurably to my own ability to do well as a student, particularly in graduate school. The book is written in an easy to understand fashion, provides quite a few practical examples, and does not contain a lot of fluff. It's a book that will be of benefit to any student.

Maresca Geetanjali's book would be very helpful for a struggling student desiring to improve grades to a "B" or an "A". These days, teaching staffs have to comply "at least loosely" with the notion of a "Bell Curve". It's not a hard and fast rule; however, the notion of a Bell Curve helps to curb grade inflation.Geetanjali covers the essential elements of good study habits with an emphasis on positivity, setting goals, avoiding distractions and segmenting complicated projects into smaller snippets. The author spends quite a bit of time on planning and organizing work so that the assignments can be completed with less pressure on the student. There are times when even the best efforts of students are stymied by a lack of comprehension of the material. In these cases, a tutor needs to be engaged. Most academic institutions make provisos for tutoring needs. Generally, there are libraries, learning centers and teacher assistants to help alleviate the day-to-day grind. In the experience of this reviewer, students need to consult with tutors at various junctures during the semester-particularly in the maths, sciences and in engineering. In addition, students need to master the prerequisites BEFORE taking the course - not while the course is in progress.Teaching staffs are moving away from the notion that a mid-term and final should constitute the whole grade. Now, teachers are considering class participation, testing, papers and group projects so that the subject is presented in a variety of settings. This new emphasis simulates the idea of a work product, as well as, classwork done within a peer group structure or setting.Overall, Geetanjali's book could be very helpful in raising grades although most curricula are designed so that students can receive assessments in the "C+" to an "A" range with an honest effort. A better title for this book would be "Anyone Can Improve Their Grades-How To Beat Procrastination, Reduce Stress And Improve Your Grades With An Honest Effort".College Vibrations: College Success And The Road To Graduation! (The College Experience Book 1)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Powerful tips! By rpv Mixing her personal experiences with real life points for children and adults to ponder, the author has provided an easy but powerful read. I like this area because I coach my daughter on many of these points. I give my daughter her space and have her grow. I don’t care much about grades, but whether she has mastered the concepts and able to think on herself. I like the chapters on nourishing the mind , getting enough sleep and exercise regimens. I can echo with food choices. I am a plant based vegan and my daughter pours glasses of whole food smoothie. I can see it improves her focus. Agility as well as all round performance. We are into meditation also. Proper mindfulness exercisers and meditation helps greatly in grades. Although this book does not go into meditation, it is a very powerful tool if practiced for 20 mins a day. Preferably 20 min morning and evening. The book outlines various strategies for planning, getting help, taking care of exams, before exams and a variety of topics. Very well described and sure to help kids in need. I was provided a sample e-book in exchange of a review.

Are you mentally prepared for the life of a correctional officer? If not. I highly recommend this EXam study guide, for the corrections officer test. It is well written and formatted. Making it easy for anyone studying for the exam to full comprehend and capture all concepts that will be in the exam. I love how the first section of the of the book are strategies for all test takers. There are 12 in total. Each of the strategy is broke-down into few sentences for further explanations. Applying these strategies will definitely prove your test score. Regardless, of the topic. The book covers these topics: The criminal justice system, standards, facility accreditation, male and female populations, deliberate indifference, the turner test, and much more. Every thing that you have covered in your classes is listed here. Each topic is broke-down into sections. Each section is design to explain the information being presented with extreme ease. For everyone and anyone to fully comprehend the concept of the topics. Definitely covers everything that should be on the exam They also contain easy to follow steps and practice questions. Providing you with an insight view to what will be presented in the day of the exam. It is a great and vital tool for those who are studying for the exam or for anyone who just wants to learn something new.I received this product in exchange for an honest review.

Great information in the book, but the practice test is too easy By Annie [I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review of the product. This has, in absolutely no way whatsoever, affected my review of the product, nor has it swayed my opinion of the product or its value.]This book is not very large -- only 61 pages -- and is divided into four simple sections. The first section is the "Quick Overview" section. This section is very brief. It just gives a quick overview of the exam and how to use this book to prepare for it.The second section is a selection of 15 different test taking tips, along with a few test taking myths, such as the assumption that tests often have patterns in them that, if you can just find them, will help you answer the rest of the questions. This is, of course, erroneous, but some people need to read that in a book to actually believe it.The third section is the most detailed section. It is the section that actually breaks down everything about the corrections officer exam. This section is DEFINITELY a five star section. If I had based my entire review off of this section, alone, this book would have very easily merited five stars. It is very detailed -- very in-depth. It covers everything you could possibly need to cover in order to prepare for the correctional officer's exam. Some of the topics covered (but not nearly all of them) are as follows: Corrections, the Criminal Justice System, Audits, Male and Female Inmate Population, Federal Prison System, Juvenile Justice, Communicating Policy, Work or Food Strikes, Natural Disasters, Civil Disasters, Hostage Plans, Escape Plans, Bomb Plans, Different Prison/Correctional Officer's Jobs and Positions Available, the Fourth and Fifth Amendments, Cross-Gender Examinations, etc. etc. etc. It is most definitely the largest part of the book, and I can't imagine how they could have left out anything important. Everything that I could think of that would need to be covered in this book, I FOUND in this book. Finally, the last section is the practice exam. This exam was what made me bump my rating down to four stars. The information in this book is GREAT; truly, it is wonderful information to have if you are about to take this exam. The practice test, however, is a bit lacking. When I get a book like this, the first thing I do is flip to the practice test and see if I can answer any or most of the questions before reading the material. Then, after that, I review the material and then re-take the test to see if my scores had improved. With this study guide, however, I answered 99% of the questions correctly before ever cracking open the rest of the book. The questions were very basic ones. I was a little surprised actually because the information in the guide is wonderful and detailed and just all around great. But the practice test did not match the preparation materials.Still, despite that, this book is still a great guide to have. The information provided is amazingly precise. I just recommend that people taking the exams not become overly confident if they take this guide's practice test and do extremely well. I just don't think that this practice test mirrors the actual exam in difficulty. So yes, buy the book, and use it to study for the exam. But once you take the practice test and do well, don't automatically assume you will do well on the exam or that the actual exam will be this simple.

I thought by getting him this he would get that extra push he needed to take a step into the future. He loved it, he enjoyed reading through the questions and reading the informative material, it made him want to begin so much more. He thought it was well organized and seemed to cover all the bases of what to expect on a test . I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

On a Saturday morning in December 1973, a section of New York’s West Side Highway collapsed under the weight of a truck full of asphalt. The road was closed, seemingly for good, and the 80,000 cars that traveled it each day had to find a new way to their destinations. It ought to have produced traffic chaos, but it didn’t. The cars simply vanished. It was a moment of revelation: the highway had induced the demand for car travel. It was a classic case of “build it and they will come,” but for the first time the opposite had been shown to be true: knock it down and they will go away. Samuel I. Schwartz was inspired by the lesson. He started to reimagine cities, most of all his beloved New York, freed from their obligation to cars. Eventually, he found, he was not alone.Since the turn of the twenty-first century, a surreptitious revolution has taken place: every year Americans are driving fewer miles. And the generation named for this new century—the Millennials—are driving least of all. Not because they can’t afford to; they don’t want to. They have better ideas for how to use their streets. An urban transformation is underway, and smart streets are at the heart of it. They will boost property prices and personal fitness, roll back years of congestion and smog, and offer a transformative experience of American urban life. From San Francisco to Salt Lake, Charleston to Houston, the American city is becoming a better and better place to be. Schwartz’s Street Smart is a dazzling and affectionate history of the struggle for control of American cities, and an inspiring off-road map to a more vibrant, active, and vigorous urban future.

A very accessible, easily-readable account of the past, present, and future of transit throughout the US and the rest of the world. I especially enjoyed the anecdotes surrounding New York City, an area which Schwartz, also known as "Gridlock Sam," has much personal experience as Traffic Commissioner. The first half of the book is historical: expect to learn about the great engineering marvel and transportation failure of Robert Moses' Cross-Bronx Expressway, the political and economic reasons (as opposed to the oft-cited social reasons) behind the 50s white flight phenomenon, and other fascinating stories concerning the past 100 years of transit development. Schwartz's magic in this section is the "behind the scenes" perspective, prompting the casual reader (such as myself) to think about the issues like a transportation engineer rather than like a consumer. The second half of the book concerns the future, and does so by describing unique aspects of transit systems and traffic planning in other cities throughout the country, peppered with anecdotes from Schwartz's work as a consultant. Although I found this portion a little weaker than the NYC historical review (though I admit I am a biased reader who purchased the book out of interest in NYC's infrastructure), it was interesting to learn about the transit systems in other cities. The section about self-driving cars was especially insightful, for the same reasons as the historical portion -- it approached the topic from the perspective of a transportation engineer rather than the perspective of a technologist or consumer. The reasons I didn't rate the book 5 stars were: I found the section on Millenials and the benefits of walking a little bit unnecessarily long, although I understand why Schwartz would include it assuming an older target audience. I also would have appreciated more details, both historical and technical, in some sections, even if those details risk boring or alienating a more casual reader. If you're looking for a very easy to read introduction to the broad world of transportation and its political, social, and economic state within the country (or specifically NYC), then I highly recommend this book. If you're looking for a detailed introduction to transportation engineering, this might not be the right place to begin, although it might serve as motivational material to dig deeper.

By Kevin Cronin Great lessons from one of the nation's most prominant traffic engineers on congestion, sprawl and why we need to do something about them. As a Cleveland, Ohio cyclist, I found it insightful, but as a taxpayer I found it compelling. We can't afford unbridled highway expansion, when we can't maintain and repair what we already have.

An encouraging book for smart citizens By Stefanie Lemcke During our research on traffic and the effects for cities I came across Samuel Schwartzes book Street Smart: The Rise of Cities and the Fall of Cars. I was hesitant at first to purchase the book as I felt it really exceeded my needs – 292 pages - on smart streets only? The title turned out to be a bit deceptive, as this book is about so much more than street design: It is an explanation of American Culture, and its obsession with roads and cars, and beyond this a deep dive into the movement created by the millennials who - for the first generation of Americans - seem willing to drive less and to share more resources.Schwartz, one of the leading transportation experts in the US and a constant proponent for intelligent transportation systems, is thrilled by the combination of a change in citizens’ mentality and the smart use of data. In probably the most eye- opening chapter “What makes a smart city?”, Schwartz dives deep into what the potential for cities are. With examples ranging from the obvious European ‘stars smart cities’ like Copenhagen, Zurich and Amsterdam, Schwartz makes us understand, that functioning cities, which do not condemn its resident to sitting behind a steering wheel for hours at a time, are also real possible in the US:• L.A. has become the most promising mega city to build a smart public transportation system• Salt Lake City, with its’ Envision Utah initiative has bet on walking and transit solutions back in 1997 and is now being seen as the best large public transportation system in the US• New initiatives in many smaller US cities like Boston, Austin and San Francisco show the potential for aMobility apps ranging from CityMapper, TransitAPP to Google Maps are connecting the dots for cities and citizens alike. And Schwartz puts emphasis on the seemingly unlimited opportunities brought by technologies to make living in urban areas more attractive and healthier.Reading the book, I came to admire Samuel Schwartz’s amazing - probably excruciating difficult - efforts over the past 40 + years to change the way Americans (and New York mayors) think about transportation as centered solely around the car and its every growing need for more and bigger streets. He made me lough when he talks about his ‘many acts of municipal sabotage’ erasing an existing road that cut through a New York park from a map. And I was astonished to learn that he had the first bike lanes of New York build in the early '80s (on 5th Avenue) and that Mayor Ed Koch ultimately ordered that they be taken away. The book left me encouraged to continue to help find solutions to eliminate traffic. Even in a city like New York, arguably the most walkable U.S. city with an amazing public transportation system, the unbelievable number of 300,000 school children is being driven to school there are small ways every citizen can help to make a difference.
